It’s not just Clarence Thomas.

Neil Gorsuch sold a massive property to the head of a law firm that argues cases before the Court.

It was bought just nine days after Gorsuch was confirmed by the Senate. The buyer was never disclosed.

This is why SCOTUS needs a code of ethics.

Law firm head bought Gorsuch-owned property

The Supreme Court justice did not report the identity of the purchaser, whose firm has had numerous cases before the court.

@rbreich I'm sick of Supreme Court Justices doing basic corruption that would get a local Town Court Justice who hears traffic cases and small claims promptly thrown off the bench.
@LOLRH1 @rbreich
Shit that would cost any low wage earner their jobs even at a lower scale
@rbreich wow. the blatant ethics violations and general shady-as-hell behavior from the highest court in the land is... both shocking and totally on-brand at the same time.
🙄
@rbreich The cat's out of the bag for the entire court. This is but one example.
@rbreich El precio es bajo por el justicios
@rbreich
Honestly at this point they need to abolish that court. They are illegitimate.

@rbreich Cool how it's literally impossible to get the Supremes to admit the need for this.

The members of our highest court literally refuse to admit the BLINDINGLY goddamn obvious fact that they, same as anyone, are susceptible to bribes.

It's beneath contempt.

@rbreich That's why we need an enforcement mechanism from the executive branch as well as a strengthening of the legislative branch's impeachment powers.

@rbreich What interested me is the slam John Roberts delivered to the Federal judges who are not on the Supreme Court. Roberts said that SCOTUS, unlike all other Federal courts, does not need a code of ethics but the Supreme Court judges have such high integrity.

He is clearly implying that the integrity of all other Federal judges is relatively week. That is a surprising claim, but he seems quite serious about it.

@rbreich trying to picture how to impose a code of ethics on a rogue institution that won't police itself, but would no doubt invalidate any legislative or executive action on separation of powers grounds.
@rbreich Don't forget that Kavanaugh had a huge amount of his debt paid off as soon as he was confirmed.
@rbreich
SCOTUS needs a review of appointments taking into account all the contradictions between hearings and being seated, a review subject to recall
@rbreich let's not forget that John Roberts' wife is a consultant to law firms who have cases before SCOTUS.

@rbreich

The public corruption enabled by Citizens United needs an entire legislative agenda to counteract Republican billionaire donors who fund fascism.

Biden enacted a multi-lateral tax treaty to address corporations who shop for tax evasion havens. Build on that.

Pass Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse's DISCLOSE Act.

American democracy is under attack by a sanctions-busting oil industry and their money laundering financiers.

@rbreich SCOTUS nominees need to have a very thorough background investigation done. Yes, there needs to be a solid (and enforceable) code of ethics, but all the sketchy connections and double dealing needs to be public during the confirmation phase.
@rbreich and then Kavanaugh’s debts
Jane Roberts, who is married to Chief Justice John Roberts, made $10.3 million in commissions from elite law firms, whistleblower documents show

New documents reveal Jane Roberts made $10.3 million from elite firms, raising questions about the Supreme Court justices' conflicts of interest.

this week’s 5-4 Podcast has a great dive into Thomas’ corruption if you need to catch up on what @rbreich is talking about here
@rbreich -They think they, too, are above any laws in this country. Roberts is a freaken coward and traitor to his oath
@rbreich how does one sell something that should clearly trigger a massive tax event anonymously?

@rbreich

That's why rulings from the Roberts court should be disregarded. It has no moral authority.

@rbreich The justices are special people. They are sworn in on a holy book by an old wizard in a cloak. That ceremony gives them special powers above all corruption. They will forever be above the law.

See how stupid that sounds. They just lucked into a cool job. They should be expected to do that job and not sell out.

@rbreich There are laws that say bribery is bad, and a crime. It's that simple from here.
