The Sabotage of Twitter Is a Disaster for Democracy

Thoughts on Musk’s destruction of the virtual public square – and what democracy is losing

Democracy Americana

@tzimmer_history “Much of the moral panic over ‘cancel culture’ – which animated Musk to buy Twitter in the first place – is a reaction to precisely this: Traditionally marginalized groups have gained enough influence and have acquired the technological means to affect the political debate.”

This is the point I suspect careful histories will make. (At least, if we can shape a future that contains careful histories.)

@tzimmer_history

"I wrote about Musk’s destruction of the virtual public square"

You should have written about his destruction of *a* virtual public square.

Twitter is a large and well known instance of those, but really not the only one.

@tzimmer_history
Not to support anything Musk does... but Twitter was never good for democracy. Musk has only made it obviously so.
@tzimmer_history So it is a problem for democracy but, no one is giving a try to the project Wt.social that is a free and collaborative platform designed to work like a twitter but without algorithm and Corporate Interests
@tzimmer_history then democracy can’t exist under capitalism
@tzimmer_history We never should have put stock in making Twitter "the" public space.
@tzimmer_history
Isn't what we are seeing happening on Twitter, Capitalism laid bare?
This is where Capitalism eventually arrives.
The rich and powerful normally sit quietly in the background, pulling strings, but with Elon, here it is laid bare. A petty vengeful man using his power to control, to attack, to do whatever he can to manipulate the world.
Yes? No?

@tzimmer_history Twitter has become an anti-democratic, antisocial medium even before Musk bought it with the support of Mr Bone Saw's accomplices.

Algorithm-controlled suppression of free speech & critics of wealthy autocrats/ dicktators, who could buy or otherwise succeed at silencing freedom & justified controversy.

Let Twitter finally die - humanity deserves it, for the better!

Already slowly dying Twitter will not recover from Musk's intrusion.

@tzimmer_history Sure, but it was never particularly good square. By design it increased conflict and harassment. The only reason everybody went there was that everybody else was there and, later, familiarity. There are other, better designed, squares but now nobody wants to go there because they don’t like the benches even if they’re no worse or even more ergonomic. At some point you need to blame the visitors who won’t accept a square that’s not the one they know.
@tzimmer_history you mention Mastodon in passing but don’t really say if it can replace Twitter, or how the two can coexist
@tzimmer_history the beauty of Twitter, is that it allowed all of us to communicate, as one mind. But the destruction of Twitter by #ManChildElon will not destroy the human spirit. We will find a way to communicate. It just won’t be at the whim of a #petulant #SelfAbsorbed #arrogant creature such as #Elon.
