I used to think Elon Musk was a smart entrepreneur or whatever, until two things happened: I bought a Tesla, which started to sow my first doubts about how well his execution is going, and then he bought Twitter and started taking direct control over software engineering activities inside it.

I happen to know a lot about software engineering. As a result, I now know he is completely incompetent. 🙃

@ariadne I, too, thought he was worth a damn, and I even thought about buying a Tesla, until I understood his life mission was to make the Dutch East India Company, but on Mars.
@ariadne SpaceX does better when Elon is distracted by his side projects. I only wish his side projects weren’t so public. He should go back to failing to making car tunnels a thing.
@ariadne Yes I went through a similar progression with him; I did appreciate that he had a singular vision and was pushing things forward, if in a fairly irresponsible way. IMO the most important thing we should be doing is finding a way to teraform before the asteroid/nuclear war kills us all. Anyway, but then he took over twitter and fired all the accessibility people... so it was like wow OK nevermind, now I know you're just a rich nutball. Dodged a bullet there!
@objectinspace @ariadne the real reason he wants to go to mars is to be the real life version of Vilos Cohaagen
@mrt181 @ariadne OMG I haven't thought about that movie in forever. Now I've gotta watch it XD

@ariadne the success of Musk's businesses absolutely is inversely proportional to his amount of involvement in their operations

I figure if Musk had no influence over SpaceX operations that starship would've launched 1 to 5 years later, but would've achieved orbit on its first launch from a properly engineered stage zero without causing an environmental disaster. It's a damn shame given that starship is a far more compelling approach than SLS/Artemis.

OTOH, I've never owned a Tesla and never will, but I have had a chance to ride in one. Gotta say comparing it with a Hyundai Ioniq if I had any Tesla stock I would sell it very fast. The competition is wiping the floor with them.

I guess Musk's psychopathic characteristics come across as smartness or something I dunno.

@msh i got the tesla before any of the other long range EVs hit the market. it came with the battery pack connection not fully seated 🙃
@ariadne I thought the same before he decided (likely all by himself) to launch starship without a flame diverter like *all other space vehicles including falcon 9*. He probably thought it will be very cool if his spaceship launches straight from a parking lot like in the movies ;). Now the pad is completely destroyed and the concrete debris likely damaged 5 engines contributing to a failed launch. 🤡
@ariadne American versions of Tesla are poor quality. In Europe, they're okay.

@BigCaddy

@ariadne
That's more or less the difference between European and American engineering;) joke aside, there's been unpainted Tesla's delivered to customers in Europe as well...

Elon Musk Is Making Choices That Are Eerily Similar to Henry Ford’s

This isn’t the first time a carmaker has endangered his empire just to share his bad takes.

Slate
@vipaal Henry Ford was a literal supporter of the nazis, so this scans 🙃

@ariadne I don't know if his cost cutting will fail. Or if his changes in moderation policies won't have enough angry people flock to the service to offset healthy users and advertisers fleeing.

However, I will no longer encourage any of his ventures. I will no longer cheer at his advances in self driving cars or towards putting people on mars.

I wasn't informed enough before Twitter to know that his methods are inhumane and that he is a net negative for humanity. Now I know.

@ariadne the Thai soccer team incident where he made the BS submarine, tried to be the center of attention then accused the local guy who questioned him of being a pedophile is when I realized he had some serious narcissistic personality flaws and was at least partially a phony. People easily forget.
@psiphi by the time that happened I had already owned one of his cars and was already skeptical 🙃

@psiphi @ariadne

that exactly. For me, he was "meh, some techbro trying to get attention" but after that, it was obvious he was the most insecure, self-centered, egotistical cry baby ever.

@psiphi That was the exact moment when the pedestal broke for me and his statue came crashing down. Like no matter if he's good or not at engineering, he cannot be a good person and act like that. And being a good person is a very important trait for me.

(Also it was obvious the proposed submarine was a Bad Idea so I was like "hmmm..." about the engineering part.)

@ariadne Back when I used to hire people I discovered that one of the most important skills to hire for was “good judgement.” And one of the key requirements for good judgement was self-criticism. Self-criticism is how you improve your judgement, because you’re the only thing you actually control, the only thing you can actually change. I also discovered that good judgement was independent of intelligence. Musk doesn’t seem to do self-criticism very well. Smart, but same mistakes, over and over.

@ariadne For decades, our people have written complex and detailed stories about people just like Space Karen. Chronicled for the world to see in sacred places such as thedailywtf.

The terrible Elon brings is nothing new. And like well trained white blood cells, we immediately spot the disease.

@ariadne hyperloop and boring company both had some "wait-a-minute" problems -- hyperloop, issues w/ speed, radius, G forces, boring company, how do you get the cars in/out of all those tubes? (car guys focus on speed, not throughput, cars suck at throughput) and also "the hard/costly subway problems aren't the tubes, but the stations" (again, entry/exit).
@ariadne also was clear from one of their early "self-driving car" videos that they were not actually optimizing for safety, at 2x playback speed I caught the problem (that I would avoid even on a bicycle). Self-driving car must be better at this than an old fart watching an itty-bitty video at 2x playback speed. ( 2:19 in https://vimeo.com/192179727 -- car should slow or swerve away from man walking two dogs; that close is not actually safe )

@ariadne software engineers can’t smell the bullshit about FSD? Going back a decade?
@jason i did smell that BS, which is why i never paid for that feature 🙃

@ariadne I'm glad he at least has a distraction so he interferes with SpaceX less (though his years old decisions about launchpads still fuck things up lol)

Bonus is we get more friends over here whenever he does something stupid, with the downside of still fucking over people and platforming fash
