I guess I’ve wondered for a while now how we will know the moment when fascism has unequivocally arrived either in the US or UK.

There were Jews who recognised that same moment in 1930’s Germany and made escape plans.

I’ve just witnessed a number of GoFundMe pages on here for trans people to escape from the states they had long called home.

That moment is no longer a theoretical possibility, it’s sadly arrived. We can’t just pretend it’s not happening. We need global action.

@JugglingWithEggs @ghost_shit it was this one…

@JugglingWithEggs Thanks.

Read, understood, and retooted.

We are in grim times, and I fear the futures of my children and my friends.

@JugglingWithEggs the difficulty is that people such as yours truly and presumably you as well have been warning about fascism in no uncertain terms for years (7 in my case), and people just don’t want to hear it.
@datn we’ve been slipping down the slope for some time, but legislation has now been enacted with lighting speed that makes repression no longer a theoretical possibility, it’s arrived.
@JugglingWithEggs i completely agree. the challenge is raising an effective cry.
@datn building bridges between targeted groups, being an ally - these are important things we can all do, but most importantly getting our representatives (where ever that might be and whatever level) to call out the behaviour we now witness in states such as Florida, Missouri and Texas as fascist.
@datn @JugglingWithEggs
An out of state friend asked me today if I was mad about Texas trying to enforce the ten commandments and prayer time in public schools and I was only slightly annoyed. She said, "but the slippery slope," and I said we are already halfway down the slippery slope. They are literally trying to kill and imprison women, queer people, Black people, and their families. This current issue, which would typically make me super angry, seems quaint at the moment. And I'm sure that's intentional, to exhaust those who would oppose their avalanche of oppression. And I'm sure they are trying to build another test case for the Supreme Court to overturn precedent and let these religious extremists ruin more lives. But, gosh, it's really hard to maintain that level of anger every single day when they are bringing something terrible to the legislature every single day. The laws they are passing right now don't help anyone.
@Heather @JugglingWithEggs sure they do. they help white supremacists hold and build power. they put judges in place years ago for this. they’re playing a very long game, something we on the left are tragically bad at.
@Heather @datn @JugglingWithEggs that’s exactly it, the effort and energy involved with being so angry all the time is meant to be exhausting. Emma Dabiri said something that has been rattling around for me- that solidarity rather than anger provokes action and forms communities. That means not only doing something about it but supporting each other when we are exhausted. This is a long-term effort, it will take a lot of people together.
@JugglingWithEggs It has arrived. It is now. We are living in Gilead right now.
@JugglingWithEggs I'm just an old CIS Jew and I'm terrified. If I were trans, I'd already be gone if I could afford to be. Most of us should be much more afraid.
@shoq @JugglingWithEggs Middle-aged Jew here. I’m fcking terrified as well.
@JugglingWithEggs @scorpiontongue I was born, raised, and spent 39 years of my life in Missouri. Moved to Oregon to transition two years ago. Now I can never go home.
@irisjadegrimm @scorpiontongue I am glad you are somewhere safe, but can’t imagine how it must feel to no longer be able to go back to the place that has all your memories of home. I sincerely hope this era will pass, but I fear how it will come to pass.
@JugglingWithEggs Ah, man, it’s been over here (in the UK) for a long time. I was at Imperial War Museum, in London, visiting the Holocaust exhibition there, and was horrified to see some of the printed media, from the UK, at that time. Really scary stuff.

@JugglingWithEggs

In 2016 I re-read Isherwood's "Berlin Stories.” (“Cabaret” is loosely based on them.)

The thing I learned is that wealthy German Jews did not think the Nazis would come for them and stayed too long.

@JugglingWithEggs For the UK, it was when they started sending #Windrush people away.
@JugglingWithEggs I suspect a lot of people will just move states.
@timyen @JugglingWithEggs Those with means will. What about everyone else? As someone who has moved states a half-dozen times, it’s not an accessible option for everyone.
@JugglingWithEggs
As a trans person in a state pushing anti-trans laws I have to say it doesn't feel like fascism arrived just recently. It arrived somewhere in the first half of the 2010s. But there's a difference between fascism arriving and it seizing power and effectively ending democracy. They were halfhearted and disorganized and screwed up their first attempt to seize power. This feels like it could be the setup for a second more organized national coup in the next few years (maybe 2024).
@JugglingWithEggs it is well entrenched in the UK.
@JugglingWithEggs Is there a search feature to find them? How? How can we help and donate? Are there services or organizations that help to donate to??
@CoastalCoasting I’m aware of the work these guys do globally (https://www.rainbowrailroad.org/stories/issues) and I have seen individual GoFundMe pages…but it would be great if anyone could give details of groups that are specifically helping in Red States.

@CoastalCoasting Due to the Missouri Attorney General’s emergency regulation that bans gender-affirming care for many Missourians, we encourage any Missourian interested in starting gender-affirming care to make an appointment before the regulation takes effect on April 27.

TRANSforming Community, TRANSforming Care is Missouri’s first transgender care program for uninsured and underinsured patients.

@JugglingWithEggs From my understanding, fascism is a slow and gradual process. This graphic was taken from Alyssa Mackenzie on Twitter (I'd rather not give Musk any more attention or traffic that is necessary), but it represents the process we're going through. Out of stages, the US is on the 8th stage right now. And this is just focusing on transgender issues.
@JugglingWithEggs
I would say there is no single "moment" when #fascism arrives.
It's a slow creeping process that insinuates gradually using hundreds of small steps. #BoilTheFrog
A lot of steps have already happened. A lot are left to go.
As politicians dial up their rhetoric and laws restricting "undesirable" people and beliefs, you start seeing more and more "ordinary citizens" committing violence against those targets.
Once street violence becomes commonplace, the camps start.
