@kaffando @mercedesallen Europe has not completely ignored this - we apparently do lack some methods for intervention on the EU level (which is probably kind of wise also to prevent biased politics... not my expertise, but seems very tricky). But it is absolutely not going unnoticed.

At least the EU's freedom of movement makes it possible to leave countries that start mistreating groups of people in ways the EU can't directly prevent. Or more accurately, removes the legal barrier to them leaving; obviously it doesn't make it economically easy. But it's something.

@kaffando @mercedesallen It has taken them 13 years to finally stop directly funding it. We had our last free election in 2010. The way our constitution was set up, the moment anyone gets 2/3 majority, it's over. It was poorly designed from the start. Worse, we somehow convinced ourselves that the only obvious thing left to do is "not our way".

Ongoing EU procedures for violation of rule of law in Hungary barely counts as "completely ignoring". At the same time Hungary is a full member state of EU who can, and does, block various EU initiatives that require equivocal agreement e.g. to support Ukraine. Therefore Hungary does have a leverage over EU and it does use it for its benefit.

The fact that this is justified by religious reasons should cause a MAJOR OUTCRY by the churches!
Do I hear something from them? No.
The fact that the EU has nothing in charge for this kind of super criminal behavior is this. The EU is still the EEC it was from the beginning. A pure economic construct. All the democratic plugins added in order to call it EU are just loveless addons, poorly attached

@mercedesallen It seems the haters are on the rise everywhere. We need to put a human face back on hated groups. It is easy to hate an "other" but not so much if they look like someone you might go for a pint/coffee/tea with.

I know saying is the easy bit. Doing is a whole other story.
