I need your help…

NPR is leaving Twitter but they are planning to focus on Instagram

We need to tell them to join the Fediverse

Many of their journalists’ accounts, as well as their main account, haven’t been active on mastodon. Tell them how much we need them here. (In fact, they should have their own instance)

Use the link, tell NPR we are waiting for them here and spread the word far and wide:

@flexghost Glad to see you pushing this out! Already sent mine!

C'mon Masto! This is a perfect opportunity to have your voices heard!

@flexghost They've set up shop here. @npr

@Jayslacks @npr read their timeline. It’s barely used in most are cross posted.

It took more energy for you to reply to this than to reply to them

@flexghost @npr From what I'm seeing, it's become far more active in the last few hours.
@Jayslacks @npr look over there…it’s the point I’m making. Catch it!
@Jayslacks @flexghost @npr That's a bot. Completely automated. Might not even be set up by NPR.
@Tweetfiction @Jayslacks @npr absolutely. And cross posts don’t count. We want an instance including all their major journalists

@flexghost @Jayslacks @npr

Maybe now @NPR has incentive to GET BUSY over here

@flexghost @Jayslacks @npr

and in this case, "barely used" includes "not at all in three years" 🙄

@Jayslacks @flexghost It looks like @npr is a bot that reposts their twitter content, not an actual NPR managed account.
@Jayslacks That appears to be a repeater account set up by someone else, not NPR themselves. @flexghost @npr
@Jayslacks @flexghost @npr that looks like a Twitter re-posting bot, there's nothing new on it since they left Twitter.
@flexghost I left them a message.
@MidLifeBroad Thank you

@flexghost @MidLifeBroad

I would think National Public Radio would be quite interested in International Public Social Media

@flexghost I actually think they have an account. I follow a NPR account.
@flexghost I wasn’t sure. Is there any kind of verification here?
@MidLifeBroad depends on the server but yes
@flexghost especially, I'd think, anyone who has experience setting up their own mastodon server and can give them advice on how to do mastodon.npr.org
@flexghost thanks! i posted the following under 'Business Development' "I received this call to action this morning. You need to look closely at making and maintaining your own Mastodon instance on the Fediverse. It's the future of Social Media. I've been here for years and you will find it to be a great independent forever home that NPR can control. Please consider at least testing before you jump to another commercial entity like Instagram."
@flexghost and in reply i received: NPR | 4/12/2023

Dear Kelley,

Thank you for contacting NPR.

We appreciate your interest in partnering with us. We’ve shared your note with our Business Development team for consideration.

Please note that we do not offer updates regarding submissions. If we have further questions, a representative from our Business Development team will contact you.

Thank you,
NPR Business Development
@flexghost Sent a message to NPR asking them to come to Mastadon!
@flexghost "Tell them"??? Invite them, persuade them, cajole them surely?
@flexghost

Done. I encourage everyone else to as well.
@flexghost any specific category you'd recommend? I opened the page but got a little overwhelmed 😅
@badrihippo business development or other

@flexghost I sent a letter.

"I was fascinated to see this article detailing NPR's decision stop posting on Twitter because of the "government funded" media label. https://www.npr.org/2023/04/12/1169269161/npr-leaves-twitter-government-funded-media-label

I know that NPR is planning to focus more on Facebook and Instagram as large networks. Please also consider a federated network, like Mastodon or Pixelfed. While these networks are smaller than instagram, they are growing quickly. Content on Mastodon is not algorithmically prioritized..."

"... so non-clickbait, non-bombastic content performs better and engagement tends to be higher.

Also, the network is not governed by a mercurial billionaire but a collection of volunteer-run moderators.

Some media companies are encouraging their journalists to create mastodon accounts, such as the Washington Post: https://mastodon.social/@drewharwell/109711258904364441

Various other media companies are spinning up Mastodon services for their staff:

@flexghost I just sent a message. I was somewhat bewildered by all the options, but I decided "NPR management" was best. I encourage others to chime in!
@flexghost Done! I hope it works. I don’t use any Meta products for the same reason I don’t use Twitter: batsh!t crazy leadership.
@flexghost I already sent them an email & mentioned the fact that mastadon users helped raise over 200,000$ to save the Texas observer
@flexghost I just sent one to NPR management letting them know how great Mastodon would be for its ability to create an instance that is managed by the agency and contains all the shows and journalists that people are wanting to follow so you know you’re following the right people!
@flexghost Done! I suggested they set up their own instance or join an existing one like https://journa.host
