Significant detail regarding #ClarenceThomas failure to disclose multiple gifts of travel from Harlan Crow over the years. In 2004, the LA Times reported on gifts Thomas disclosed he had received from Crow. After this reporting, Thomas didn’t stop accepting gifts from Crow; he just stopped disclosing them. https://www.latimes.com/politics/story/2023-04-06/the-times-reported-about-justice-thomas-gifts-20-years-ago-after-he-just-stopped-disclosing-them #JudicialEthics
After an L.A. Times story on Thomas' gifts, he stopped disclosing

A 2004 Los Angeles Times report disclosed gifts to Justice Thomas from rich Texan Harlan Crow. In response, Thomas stopped disclosing them.

Los Angeles Times
@heidilifeldman And the Los Angeles Times, soon to be hollowed out by corporate raiders from Chicago, stopped digging into pretty much anything, allowing corruption to run amok in Los Angeles.
@heidilifeldman - Consciousness of guilt?

@heidilifeldman what's really terrible is that both parties have had many chances to do something about creating a code of ethics at the supreme court. clearly this has been a problem ppl have known about for awhile.

& still, crickets on court expansion (or ethics!) from dem leadership, who cant even stop congress from trading stocks.
i wonder sometimes, can anyone see how corrupt our govt has become?
we have one party that wants to make it worse & the other wants to maintain status quo. awful

@rustoleumlove @heidilifeldman
Oh stop with the both sides narrative. Only one side appoints judges that believe rules don’t apply to them
@heidilifeldman But Thomas just explained this morning that his friends told him he didn't need to disclose, but now he will, since they actually fixed the rules. I'm sure the LAT story had nothing to do with it! Why wouldn't a Supreme Court Justice just take legal advice from his buddies?
@Philomorph @heidilifeldman If they were buddies of his from the Federalist Society, it's likely they were giving bad advice...
@heidilifeldman Agree--significant detail. The media has been MIA on this.
@heidilifeldman If only we lived in a democracy and could do something about it when judges are corrupt.

@heidilifeldman Mens rea can be difficult to prove in bribery cases, but damn if that isn't as close to a silent confession as it gets.

If he didn't believe there was an appearance of impropriety, he wouldn't have stopped reporting the gifts.

@heidilifeldman

Lifetime appointments are the best.

@heidilifeldman
This proves Thomas didn’t “fail to report”; starting in 2004 he CHOSE NOT TO REPORT the Crow gifts (& how many others we’ll never know about) because he wished to COVER UP his acceptance of lavish gifts.
Now he issues a statement tryin ta portray as a few cozy family trips & personal hospitality “as friends do.” Wonder if he & Ginny reciprocated with half million $$ luxury jaunts for the crows? Gimme a break!

@heidilifeldman They feel ethics do not apply to them.
@wawanda @heidilifeldman And they always get so indignant when others suggest that ethics do, in fact, apply to them.
@bruce @heidilifeldman They think they are better then everyone else.

@heidilifeldman

@Teri_Kanefield :

In the face of this evidence, is it not possible to charge #ClarenceThomas for #TaxFraud. If not, why?
He cannot possibly be immune from persecution, as he has life tenure.

@heidilifeldman Let's hope he was equally ill-advised about reporting large gifts on his income taxes.

@heidilifeldman person’s who’s sole appointed role is to insure the countries laws are followed with honesty and integrity fails to follow honesty and integrity …
@heidilifeldman Oh, like the $640,0000 disclosure he failed to make from the Heritage Foundation to help fund Ginni’s participation in the Jan 6, 2021 insurrection. Wonder who he “consulted” with on that!
@heidilifeldman. They sexual abuser should never been a Supreme Court Justice. It's time for him to resign or be impeached.

@heidilifeldman

AMERICA: Why didn't you disclose all these free luxury vacations Grifty G. McGrifterson was taking you on?

THOMAS: I was informed I didn't have to disclose that.

AMERICA: Who the hell told you that?

THOME: I don't have to disclose that.

@heidilifeldman
Just imagine the outrage spewed by @GOP if the things Thomas and his wife have done were tied to a liberal justice.
@heidilifeldman #judicialethics Clarence Thomas again proves that with great power comes great irresponsibility.
@heidilifeldman He won’t support giving victims of discrimination a hand up, but he sure enjoys getting handouts.
@heidilifeldman He should be impeached! He has abandoned the law and instead makes rulings based on personal opinion!
@heidilifeldman that then sounds like he made false official statements?
18 USC 1001 if I recall?
@heidilifeldman is there a rule that breaking the law is grounds for removal??? Or are SCOTUS justices allowed to be criminals for their lifetime term? If so. That’s a really bad system!

@heidilifeldman

The embarrassingly simple minded "they told me it was ok to not report millions in gifts" is worse than it looks, because the corrupt Justice DID REPORT gifts, up until the gifts got really big.
