This is such a weird article... that talks about "what if social media were not for profit, was decentralized, and federated..." and then only in the ver last paragraph mentions that Mastodon exists, but doesn't say "and it does everything I talked about in this article" https://newint.org/features/2023/02/20/what-if%E2%80%A6-social-media-were-not-profit
@mmasnick if you look at the list of articles by this reporter you can see they don't really cover information technology. So my explanation would be simple unfamiliarity with the topic being written about.
@Loukas @mmasnick then they should not be writing the article. 🤷
Chasing the latest fad I suppose.
@swansinflight @mmasnick New Internationalist has no money, unfortunately. So you get people trying to fill several roles at once.
@mmasnick no other big social media platforn will tell people "there is a mastdon that you must know"😜

@mmasnick

“It feels like an experiment. We will need many more. But from little acorns…”

WTF are they on about. People need to get out from under their rock before writing an article.

My take on it:

It's more about encouraging the people to host many more fediverse instances (as Mastodon is only one of them).

This way, small communities make the mammoth, sustained ecosystem.
@mmasnick "An editor asked me about Mastodon shortly before this went live so I added a blurb to make him happy."
@mmasnick wow, you are correct it is buzzard, he was describing the Fedivers and yet only mentions it's biggest and most successful community in passing. And then alludes to the idea that is an "experiment" like it's not a proven concept. I don't think he did much research into the subject.

Bought a latex mattress topper bc sick of waking up in agony every morning.

After heaving the thing off the shelf in Ikea, wrestling it into the car, dragging it into the house, wrestling it into position on the bed, I'll probably wake up in a lot of pain tomorrow morning.(sigh)

Bah… youngin'… is ICQ still around? That was my recollection.

@mmasnick
When did "social media" companies become "big tech"?

@mmasnick Thank you, for pointing this out, Mike.

@mmasnick

Does not even link to it....

@mmasnick It is odd. It feels like he started a while back, and kept adding to it incrementally, not knowing where he was going or where he would shop it later. It could have begun with a small mod of the last paragtraph.
