It'll be better, they said! 1Password 8 is our best yet*.

* = for us. For the customer, it's tale of 1000 papercuts.

Update: I disabled and re-enabled the Safari extension. It now shows the extension... but won't autofill.

🄓

Back again, I see.

@caseyliss
I’ve used 1P for years and never seen that. How often is that occuring?

@1password

@gatewayy @caseyliss @1password well … 8 is pretty new. And Casey is running Ventura, right?
@caseyliss @1password A shift to Electron has literally never resulted in a better experience for users. All it does is make a crappy experience for users in exchange for some perceived engineering simplification.
@caseyliss @1password For me the loss of functionality in the browser extension from 7 > 8 is worse than the app differences. Nothing auto fills for me, nothing. My keyboard shortcut for Quick Access never works as expected in the browser. Even if I go and manually click the extension, and select the entry for the current site in the front most tab, it doesn’t populate the empty form. It opens up a new tab, loads the same site and then prompts me to select a login (because auto fill never works)
@camkerr @caseyliss @1password Also, if you ā€œClear History…", you get logged out. The extension is pointless for me with that.
@camkerr @caseyliss @1password this is my problem with 1P8. The bugs aren’t even consistent anymore. Auto fill takes 2 seconds to work, the launcher may or may not actually put the 1P app window on focus. Actively looking for alternatives now :/

@caseyliss @1password ouch. Really sorry to see that. I’m wondering why I haven’t had an issue.

I know it doesn’t help you but it got me wondering.

@caseyliss @1password it is an absolute shame what 1Password has become.

I forgive and even sympathize with the move away from native, but it simply doesn’t work 50% of the time for me. This used to be the first app I’d recommend to family and friends. Now I tell them to use iCloud Keychain. ā˜¹ļø

@caseyliss @1password This hasn’t happened to me yet and I’m happy to be the unicorn right now I guess.
@caseyliss is this your pi-hole (rightfully) blocking something which prevents the whole thing from loading?
@caseyliss @1password happens to me all the time these days

@so Interesting. Is there a story for Chrome and Edge? I use these (Mac Safari just doesn’t do it for me). But I like the way the iOS app looks, so I’m interested!
@dgp Browser extensions were added last year for Chromium and Firefox. They work like the old 1Password extension, and connect to the desktop app.
@so So, it took me 3 months to get the time to do this, but I've just converted over to this and I already love it! Even my Android tablet was easy to get running with a compatible client. Going to be paying for their paid option which ... supports family sharing?!? IMAGINE THAT! I'm super excited to set up a shared database for my family next!
@caseyliss I moved to StrongBox for Mac and iOS and don’t regret it. The UI leaves a little bit to be desired, IMHO, but it works very well.
@caseyliss @1password FWIW: mine did this and I disabled the extension, removed the extension app (a new thing if you're on v8), restarted, then reinstalled the app and extension and it's been fine ever since. Seems like a giant PITA to do but at least I only had to do it once. (I tend toward overkill since I am IT.)
@caseyliss @1password it’s so frustrating! How do we trust this app to hold our sensitive info?
@caseyliss @1password. I had this problem shortly after upgrading to V8. What is weird is that it just magically went away after a while. No idea what happened or why. Strange, to say the least.
@caseyliss came for the alt text and wasn’t disappointed

@caseyliss @1password

Happes to me every day for the past several weeks. I’m 95% ready to switch to another solution. Such a shame. Have been 1Password user for many years.

@caseyliss @1password For Pete’s sake. So sorry dude.

@MrRooni with respect, I hope 1Password 8 has been spectacular for y’all. Because for me, it’s been the opposite.

The problem with setting such a high bar with 7 is that it makes it hurt that much more when 8 misses the mark.

@caseyliss You’re not alone in your experience and we’re working to make it better. I realize that doesn’t help in the moment.
@MrRooni @caseyliss Why are there so many bugs in 8 compared to 7? Basic functionaliry is broken, per Caseys post and my experience. 8 seems like a regression, yet there's not to me that many new festures compared to 7. Is it because 8 is a complete rewrite?
@torsteinv Much of the trouble is in the connection between the browser and the desktop app. We took a different approach from 7 and it’s got some issues.
@MrRooni What is the next step, you think? Reverting to 7 approach or working out the kinks in 8? I mean do you guys know exactly what the issues are and how to fix them, it's just taking time, or is it a complex problem and you might have to revert to 7 approach?
@torsteinv We've got a group of folks working through the issues. It's a fairly complex beast (regardless of approach) and it's taking some time. Reverting to the v7 approach isn't an option due to how we're packing and shipping the browser extension in v8 (as a separate app).

@MrRooni @torsteinv can we use on v7 on Ventura?

I’m on Monterey until ~June probably šŸ˜

@dxzdb @torsteinv I think so? I haven’t tried, to be honest.

@MrRooni I was prompted to TouchID seconds before this. Once I did, everything disappeared, and now I see this.

I really don't mean to beat a dead horse here, but truly, 1P8 is an exercise in papercuts.

@MrRooni Oh fun. šŸ™„

@MrRooni The other really shitty part is, these issues may very well be with Safari. And in 1P7, everything was so rock-solid, that I'd have blamed Safari first.

But now, my natural assumption is that it’s 1P8's fault, because so many things are broken in small and insufferable ways these days.

Y'all have bought internal speed/ease of development by spending my confidence and enthusiasm.

@caseyliss Yes, and it's really difficult to refill the well of good will once overdrawn. We've got a group of folks working on these paper cuts right now.

@MrRooni hi

ā˜¹ļø

@MrRooni Aaaaaaaand just found myself in this infinite loop again.

@caseyliss A possible workaround is to use Universal Autofill instead. It doesn’t use the browser extension at all and instead uses the macOS accessibility APIs to fill your credentials. By default it can be invoked with Command + \. https://support.1password.com/mac-universal-autofill/

@MrRooni This time was iPad though.
@caseyliss Goddammit. Password AutoFill is still great for usernames and passwords, but not for credit cards and personal info. You could drag and drop from the main app in slide over. (I realize that the extension should work, but at this point I’m doing triage until we can get it sorted for you).

@caseyliss I don’t know where the Chrome extension (because that’s the way I experience it normally) falls on the 7 vs 8 map, but I CAN say that on my Macs, 1PW has become a daily exercise in ā€œYou have ONE job, for the love of Pete can you just f*%king do it??ā€

iOS 1PW is great though, and I do not want the crap that is iCloud Keychain, with its inability to import/export, and lack of support for various secret types like credit cards, bank accounts, etc.

I’m really hoping something comes around to save us.

@caseyliss @1password the browser extension is by far the most horrible piece of software on my Mac. It literally never works.
@caseyliss @1password I have never regretted using 1Password until v8. It went from an essential app that was delightful to use to something that works a lot of the time but often manages to be grating or infuriating. Makes it harder to ignore the free Keeper family license I have through work now.
@caseyliss every week or so… I hear you, sir…
@caseyliss It's SO BAD now. This happens to me frequently, and the only workaround I’ve found is a restart of both 1Password and Safari...and sometimes THAT doesn't even fix it!
@caseyliss I've been wondering if I can move back to @1password 7 - I mean, it's still available in the App store. šŸ¤·šŸ» [edit] To be clear, I *love* 1Password - I've been using it since V2, I just want it to be better.
@caseyliss autofill also fails for me often. Sometimes the click on the 1p-textfield-icon fails and command-\ works or vice versa. I don't know what's going on. Maybe it's a "DOM readyā€ kind of problem of the extension.
@caseyliss I complained to 1Password support about this, they suggested that restarting all the apps is a perfectly valid solution... I feel like it's caused by large vaults, some race condition, really wish they would take more pride in their product and really work on solving this. It's not a new problem.
@caseyliss I have been having weirdness also and followed the directions in this post and it started working again - hopefully it stays that way. https://1password.community/discussion/139005/safari-extension-shows-open-1password-but-button-does-not-work
Safari Extension Shows "Open 1Password" But Button Does Not Work

Recently, clicking the button in Safari shows me the popover and the button to 'Open 1Password' (the 1PW app is open and unlocked, BTW) but clicking it shows a very brief spinner and then the button again.

1Password Support Community
@caseyliss Is the browser extension still necessary given that they have whole computer auto fill?
@caseyliss I suppose you might lose the cc auto fill feature…
@caseyliss I have had so many issues with 1Password lately, some seem like they’re caused by Safari autofill overlapping intent with the extension, but most aren’t. If you find any solutions please post!
@caseyliss they changed something recently where I have to restart Safari often to keep auto fill working
@caseyliss I ended up having to disable the link between 1password and the extension. It works better now but I need to login with my master passcode way more often. @1password

@caseyliss I have an intel mac issued for work and the extension hasn't worked with safari since 1Password 8 came out. I now use Edge on that computer and it works about 75% of the time.

On my person M1 Macbook Pro it works about 50% of the time and I refuse to install another brower.

i'm about this close | | to just saying screw it and put everything in Passwords by Apple.

@caseyliss Is there any actual alternative to 1P? BitWarden seems like it might be it, but i hate the gui. it's so "cross platform" and non mac native.
@caseyliss I refuse to install a version of @1password that’s not in the App Store. I’m already annoyed the nerfed local syncing. If they force me out of the App Store, I’ll be considering other solutions.
