Have you been following the story on the clearcutting of #Tewin Lands in #Ottawa ?

What a tragedy! I'm very concerned it sets a precedent for other development entities to clearcut in the greater Ottawa area. Recently they claimed exemption from the bylaw, stating that they intended to use the land for farming.

In a nutshell, a group called #AlgonquinsOfOntario and (developer) #Taggart deforested some 70 hectares of rural woodlands, containing at least 25,000 trees in the south east (near Carlsbad Springs). Not only that, they did it at night night and it happened without the prior knowledge of residents or the City of #Ottawa.... seemingly in defiance of local bylaws.

@mollyanglin Seems they tried to make things right after the fact by finding a farmer to say they'd farm it, which would excuse the clear cut. Pretty fishy. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/tewin-taggart-clear-cut-lease-march-3-1.6786040 #Ottawa #onpoli

@SheamusPatt It is so shady. I emailed my councillor about it today. I am a bit late. But really, they should enforce the bylaw. 😡

The farming exemption feels very much like an afterthought excuse… a loophole. And it's criminal that the city lifted the stop-order when the farming claim came to light.
