People who say the #IPCC soft-pedals the #ClimateCrisis may have read only the #SynthesisReport

"It puts the thousands of pages of science into a shorter format, which is further condensed into a “summary for policymakers”, a scientific underpinning for global climate action. It is written by #scientists but #haggled over by representatives of the UN’s nearly 200 governments, so some argue it is subject to #WateringDown by regimes that do not like its messages."

What is the IPCC AR6 synthesis report and why does it matter?

Summary report by world’s leading climate scientists sets out actions to stave off climate breakdown

The Guardian

The #AR6 #SynthesisReport is out today:

"Governments gave their blessing on Sunday to a major new UN report on #ClimateChange, after approval was held up by a battle between rich and developing countries over #emissions targets and financial aid to vulnerable nations.

The UN plans to publish the report at a news conference this [European] afternoon.

Here’s what to expect from the latest IPCC report

Evidence on climate change and its impacts has been gathered from around the world.

So far journalists have been too polite to say this, but it needs to be hammered home at every opportunity:
We know what to do.
We have the means to do it.
But the #FossilFuel industry is in the way, at every step.

Analysis: Latest IPCC report confirms climate change is worsening, but we have the tools to combat it

A child born now is likely to suffer, on average, three to four times as many climate extreme events in their lifetime as their grandparents did.

Again: scientists say it the way it is in the Working Group reports. Read those for the real scoop. The synthesis report is a sausage.

"A recent leak of a draft of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (#IPCC) report released on March 20 has been particularly enlightening when it comes to just how much how delegations negotiate, watered down, and delete scientists’ findings."

More evidence of tampering with the #IPCC #SynthesisReport.
I'm wondering if this could be grounds for legal action.

"China, the U.S. and Saudi Arabia are among countries that significantly altered a United Nations document that will shape global climate policy for years to come, according to an account of international negotiations preceding its release."

How China, the U.S. and others watered down a key U.N. climate document

China, the U.S. and Saudi Arabia are among countries that significantly altered a U.N. document that will shape global climate policy for years to come, a report has said.

The Japan Times

If you drill down beyond the average numbers (and don't give credence to the un-developed tech like carbon capture and storage), the urgency becomes very clear:

To stay below 1.5°C warming requires zero #emissions by 2040. But:
"Include equity and most “developed” nations need to reach zero CO₂ emissions between 2030 and 2035, with developing nations following suit up to a decade later. Any delay will shrink these timelines still further."

IPCC’s conservative nature masks true scale of action needed to avert catastrophic climate change

Climate models embed colonial attitudes and massive inequality.

The Conversation

"A group of European nations wanted the report to say that solar and wind electricity “is now cheaper than energy from fossil fuels in many regions”.

Saudi Arabia “strongly opposed inclusion of the sentence”.

The Bahamas’ representative called for the report to say specifically that #CCS technology, unlike wind and solar, is not getting cheaper.

But Saudi Arabia pushed back, saying that CCS and #CDR are “in fact unavoidable”. "

While the Saudis pushed carbon capture and storage technology, Europeans fought for wind and solar to be talked up in the report.

@HistoPol

Yeah.
Think about who it is that is pushing so assiduously for #CDR, #CCS, #BECCS, and lately also #hydrogen. After they quietly dropped "fuel from algae".

Right: the #FossilFuel industry. You gotta ask yourself: what's in it for them?
