Finland has been ranked as the happiest country in the world for the sixth consecutive year.

Also, here is a photo of the five leaders of Finland's largest political parties.

#SomeGoodNews

@Miriamm Fact check: Those are not the current leaders of the five largest parties in Finland.

@JimMaruschak @Miriamm My thoughts exactly! The only reason for this picture is to represent the current leaders of the governing majority.
@Harjus @Miriamm Actually I interpreted the meaning to be "ha ha no men", but that isn't true.
@Miriamm I may have to move to Finland.
@Miriamm Not that I'm against this but did anyone even fact this?
@Miriamm that's why my vote always goes to a woman.
@Miriamm Woman of a Certain Age here in FL/USA asking if men in Finland are allowed to tell these women what they can/cannot do with their own uteri? Just asking for all the women in US.

@Miriamm #Somebadnews too, one of these women is a racist fascist. Also the currently most popular party is lead by a man.

But yeah, we've had plenty of women in politics, including prime ministers and a president. Marin's done a really good job in my opinion, considering how awful the times have been.

@jorkkeli @Miriamm A problem, as the UK has demonstrated consistently since 1979, is that having a female leader does not automatically solve anything. (Best case: you get Nicola Sturgeon. Worst case: you get Liz Truss.)
@jorkkeli @Miriamm white women are on the baricade in the fight against democracy in America, that doesn't mean more parties should have women at the top.
@WhyNotZoidberg @jorkkeli @Miriamm I'd like to know where that particular "fact" comes from. Last I checked, women are the minority in the current Republican party. So I would argue they are not "leading the charge." The loud women in the MAGA cult are there to prop up that image that women in general support our own oppression. We do not.

@cujobyte @jorkkeli @Miriamm

Women are a minority in all parties.
That is not what I talk about, it is the women on the white supremacy barricades on the grassroot and local levels.

Also I am very well aware that actual majority and majority of votes are not the same thing due to both jerrymandering and the deliberate design of the voting system in America that assigns unused land more voting rights than citizens living in cities, hence letting 25% of the population rule 75%.

@cujobyte @jorkkeli @Miriamm Anyway, I have changed the wording of the original reply; white women actively taking part in protests to preserve white supremacy are very common, forming the Proud Girls of America (as a sister group of Proud Boys), storming the capital, organizing anti LGBTQ rallies, and of course generally voting Republican in larger numbers than Democrat. Even in most blue states.
White men are WORSE, but not by that much.

@jorkkeli @Miriamm
"one of these women is a racist fascist"

I'll play that game.
...
the second from the left, black blazer with pin? (checking my ability to suss out nazis)

@Miriamm it’s “as if” they’ve proven that women in leadership positions are practical and empathetic…🙃
@Miriamm
@merileedkarr
Prime Minister #Marin (on the left) and member of the European Parliament (Finns Party) Teuvo Hakkarainen (on the right/right-wing asshole)). One of the photos has been claimed to be inappropriate and tasteless. Guess which one? Oh man. #Finland #MAGA
@ClaudiaZahn @Miriamm not the gorgeous looking #Marin? What’s wrong with Finland?
@420 @Miriamm
This came from the far right corner around the guy on the right side...

@[email protected] @[email protected] One of the parties in Finland, Keskusta, the "center party", is also lead by a woman. She's, sorry to put it, an arsehole.

Gender doesn't fix things, women are not magically more sane. But gender equality helps, because generally we need to ditch the male run society in favour of more equal gender representation.

@[email protected] To clarify, by "arsehole" I mean "for climate destruction" and generally sticking to the past of destructive capitalism.
@[email protected] Oh I forgot, the finnish far-right party "Finns" is also headed by a woman famous for her extreme far right views.
@Miriamm Coincidence? I think not!
@Miriamm Okay, compare that to this. No wonder people in Finland are happier.
@Miriamm
That's why Canada needs to elect Liberal Chrystia Freeland to the PM office soon for a happier Canada! But then again a third of Canada's voting population are conservatives, so they will all be miserable 🤣

@walterdunham @Miriamm I'm unconvinced Freeland would change much. Another stalwart defender of the primacy of status-quo wealth, like Trudeau, Harper, and other PMs back decades.

Open to pitches though.

@johnefrancis @Miriamm
Your only possible alternative is Skippy or Jag ... pick your poison 🤣

@walterdunham @Miriamm well it's definitely not Skippy.

So it's Jag and the local NDP candidate, as far as voting goes.

There's no need to limit political activity to actual political campaigns and parties...that's a system that's setup to fail Canadians and it's a waste of time. Build movements on ideas, and the spineless political system will follow.

@johnefrancis @Miriamm And that, my friend, is my perennial "minor" issue with our electiral process. We vote for the party not the person. We sometimes find ourselves NOT voting for a very good and qualified MP for fear that his stupid party leader might become PM and worse, vice-versa!

@walterdunham @Miriamm it was the black-and-white promise of electoral reform that brought Trudeau in...never supported them again after they reneged on it...and there's no way they can credibly promise it now.

I have enough faith in the courts/charter to allow conservatives to experience the brunt of their self-inflicted pain, there's not much left that they can burn down, maybe a few tax points. 40+ years of economic neoliberalism has almost run it's course.

@johnefrancis @Miriamm
At this point in time it's anyone but conservatives for me! The only issue is Jag's NDP does not have the countrywide support to get to the office. As for those MFs conservatives, they have really run themselves to the ground and deep down the rabbit hole!
@walterdunham eh, PP's been penciled in to a US cartoon, but it's not far off the mark.
@Miriamm They're Finnish politicians, but if you're going by the usual "seats in Parliament" metric they aren't the leaders of Finland's five largest political parties. Where are the leaders of the two parties which are joint second-largest, one of whom is a man while the other is a far-right extremist who associates with neo-Nazis? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_political_parties_in_Finland#Parliamentary_parties

@Miriamm I would love to see this in the US. We have many capable woman leaders who could run this nation. The main thing holding them back is our culture and specifically the US right wing, which is intent on dragging us back to the US of the 1950s. As a result, the Dems are even more hesitant to consider truly progressive women for top elected offices.
@Miriamm well, I see a correlation. A german politician of the liberal party ( #StrackZimmermann ) gave a speech during carneval suggesting, having the thrones free of the "dwarfs, born by toxiy masculinity", might lead to a better world...

@Miriamm

Danmark was ranked 2nd. About half of our political parties have female leaders.

@Miriamm it makes so much sense now.
@Miriamm Exactly a huge reason for the GOP Cancel Culture War on Women and Girls. Fear.
@Miriamm Surely there's no connection? 🤔🤔🤔
@Miriamm I was just in Finland last summer, a lovely country and now a member of NATO so Putin can keep his hands off of one of the world's success stories.
@Miriamm My Mom made me happy so I concur.
@Miriamm Margaret Thatcher, Liz Truss?
@Miriamm Sign me UP ..damn.. Next trip Finland..
@Miriamm I don't think the insinuation here is that women automatically make better leaders. What I take from this is that it's pretty nice to live in a place where it's just naturally accepted that women CAN be good leaders. That in itself I think, is a sign of a pretty happy society.
@TheWolfe @Miriamm thank you for that charitable interpretation - there are no qualities in a politician that only women can have and none that only men can have. Knowing that everybody gets to have a say in how the country may lead to happiness though.
@Miriamm hmm they all have something in common!
@Miriamm I hope it will not change soon. We're having elections right now, the ballots are opening on Friday.
@Miriamm Finally the future we were promised!

@Miriamm Note that these are _not_ the leaders of Finland’s _largest_ parties. Normally this meme is paired with a picture of the leaders of the current _government_ parties, but Annika Saarikko isn’t depicted here (instead we see… Riikka Purra maybe? I’m awful with faces and simply can’t be sure.).

The point still stands though.

@Miriamm the big reasons include social support, income, freedom, generosity and absence of corruption. Basically the polar opposite of tory and republican parties
@Miriamm they all smile too much. Or not enough. Our media, probably.
@Miriamm

people from outside don’t get the real picture of Finland because of the language barrier
it is like naming China as the happiest country in the world
