I'm usually hesitant to share too much about my son, Ripley, or his situation but our situation (US, WV/OH) changed last week. Ripley is about 18 months old and we've known since he was born that he would need a #KidneyTransplant once he was big enough. Until last week, our plan was for him to get one of mine. Unfortunately, I was disqualified, so we're on the hunt for a kidney! If you or someone you know would have any interest in being screened, you can visit https://ripley.love (1/2)
Ohio State University

The fine print: we won't be notified if you start the screening or even if you're a match unless *YOU* tell us. It's all anonymous, you can back out anytime and Ripley's insurance will cover 100% of the testing, etc. required, even if you end up not being a match. If you start the process and if it's just too much or too scary, you can back out at *any* point, no questions asked.
@developerjustin all the best on this journey. Love from NZ❤️
Thank you all for the overwhelming support this post got when I originally shared it. It is genuinely overwhelming how much attention this got so quickly. As an update, we are getting *much* closer to transplant and Ripley’s hospital just published this video today about a family who literally flew from another country to get a transplant from the surgeons who will do Ripley’s. Meeting them was like meeting rockstars or meeting Wonder Woman. Just incredible folks https://youtu.be/xInfdsGpxMs

Got interviewed by a few local news outlets for #FathersDay! I got to tell everyone that all I want for Father’s Day is a kidney. 100% forgot to plug the domain to be screened to donate a kidney to Ripley and had to tell the reporters afterward. It’s https://ripley.love by the way!

This interview is supposed to go live any minute and I am refreshing this website like I’m watching poll numbers in an election.
It’s up! The last of the local #FathersDay news stories about our family’s kidney search. And maybe the first time that anyone on Mastodon hears my accent? 😂 https://www.wvnstv.com/top-stories/fathers-day-special-the-ferrell-family-story/
@developerjustin Justin, you punched me right hard in the feels there man. Much love to the three of you. ❤️
We had Ripley's monthly visit with the #kidney docs today. Every month I joke that we won't be back next month because a kidney will become available and she let me know that they've been averaging one #KidneyDonation a month for the rest of the kids who get dialysis there. All deceased donors (this is why it's important to register!) but they've been able to take a kid off of dialysis every month since April, like clockwork. Just knocking that list down until we get to Ripley 😂

@developerjustin praying for ripley from other side of the world.

My mom is on dialysis for 7 years now. Sending ❤️ for you and family.

What’s the wait time to get transplant? In india it’s 3-6 months and china it’s in weeks. Both from my personal experience. I know ppl who used to travel to Beijing just to get transplant. (Pre COVID)

@rizwan that is very kind, thank you! The wait is definitely on the longer side here but Ripley gets a bit of priority from being a toddler. The way they explained it to us is that with children who begin dialysis before they are old enough for transplant, the “list” will say they have been waiting for a kidney since they started dialysis. For Ripley, that’s almost two years. But he has technically only been eligible for transplant since February.
@developerjustin 🤞 hope things turn around good and quicky.
I haven't posted about our kidney search in a while because it hasn't gone well TBH. But we finally have a family friend who is nearing the end of testing. She's one test away from actually traveling to the hospital and getting a final IRL evaluation. Our push now is to cover her expenses like missed wages and meals to make sure she can focus on the test. If you shared Rip's story, I'd love the help spreading the word to support his hopeful donor in completing testing: https://bit.ly/3Jiccc3
Almost two years to the day since we brought Ripley home from the hospital, we got the call tonight that there is a very good chance that we’ll be heading back tomorrow and leaving with a kidney! They said a kidney is available and we're a match, so pack our bags and be ready in the morning. They just pre screened us and said we’d know by early mid morning. Positive vibes, prayers, well wishes, magic spells and uses of the Force would go a long way tonight!

We got the green light, y’all.

We’re loading the car and about to leave 😭

I appreciate everyone reaching out today. Doesn't look like it's actually happening today though. They have to call us when there is a match but another kid at another hospital got the pancreas, so that rules the kidney out for Ripley. Holding out for the next one!
@developerjustin Yay, so happy for you all! Praying the surgery is smooth and Ripley recovers well.

@developerjustin sending all the love from other side of the world.

You have no idea how this makes me happy. Went through painful seven years for mom with dialysis and lost her recently.

Can’t wait to see your kid to become dialysis free. 🤞

@developerjustin Amazing!! Sending all the best wishes!!
@developerjustin All my best wishes to you and your lovely one. Hoping for all the best outcomes.
@developerjustin Praying everything goes through smoothly for you all tomorrow!
@developerjustin Sending you all the best wishes possible and good recovery.
@developerjustin I wish Ripley all the best. My fingers will be crossed ❤️

Three years later, y’all. It’s happening.

We’re in pre-op. The surgeon came one last time and we all had a good cry. I asked what we can know about the donor and she said right now not much but I can tell you that Ripley is an enormous comfort to their family right now and I wish I could give every kid a kidney like this one.

🙏

@developerjustin So glad to hear this! Praying everything goes smoothly for Ripley and the whole family! 🙌
@developerjustin
I gave my wife a kidney in 2015. One of the most important things I'll ever do.
Boosting.
May Ripley find his match soon.
@jasondidner thank you! I really had my heart set on donating but we'll find one!

@developerjustin Shared, wishing you and Ripley the best possible outcomes. ❤️
@developerjustin Best wishes (& a boost) from a mom of a kid with nephrotic disease. Kidney disease is tough.
@blbc thank you. They make it worth it!
@developerjustin I only have one working kidney, but I will spread the word.
@developerjustin I have a clotting disorder that bounced me out of programs (blood, spare parts) to donate like I'd wished to while alive (can donate upon death though!), but I hope all the Ripley's of the world have their chance at life and get the help they need to try. Sending your family and anyone in your similar shoes all my love.
@developerjustin I’ve already donated a kidney so I’m not qualified but that means I know how important it is so I promoted your post.
@developerjustin Good Luck to Ripley, hope it happens soon
@developerjustin Ah 😢 ! Unable to do anything else other boosting at this moment.
@mitexleo that’s still a huge help! Thank you! 🙏🏻
