Made a spreadsheet to keep track of all my music. 550+ recordings in the past 3 years!

7% actually got released.

I share this because I want to promote a different way of making electronic music:

(1) Build a performance system/instrument.
(2) Practice with it and record everything.
(3) Listen critically and improve system.
(4) Goto 2.
(5) Release the best.

It's a very fun and productive way to work!

@williamfields How do you go about making THE performance system in a DAW without having an explosion in CPU usage and a huge lack of overview? If you are using a DAW for this part of it that is.

And thanks for sharing - it's a great list!

@madskjeldgaard Yes, REAPER is part of my setup. Not sure how to answer that, except that I fetishize CPU efficiency and lightweight plugins. But, CPU is not so much of an issue these days anyway.

I think it is a common mistake to design something in your head and try to go from 0 to 100 in one big jump. Best to start small and simple and then iterate rapidly from there.

@williamfields very interesting approach. I've been moving more in this direction myself with a hardware setup designed for jamming and recording all the stems for later review/dissection.

@williamfields shout out to spreadsheets - the unsung hero of music production 😂

(I use them extensively for tracking various stages of writing an album and much more)

@williamfields yeah! This is basically how i work as well. Whether it’s software, code, a selection of hardware, guitar … whatever it is for that specific moment. Tbh I’ve never really been able to work any other way.
