In case you’re wondering how much snow has fallen in the Sierra Nevada… A friend shared this photo of a gentleman shoveling snow off his ROOF in Quincy, California.
@scottpaton
Fresh powder anyone?
⛷️🏂❄️🌨️
@scottpaton I know it must be a pain in the hole to get rid of it, but I kinda miss snow in europe.
@scottpaton Wouldn't the roof have collapsed by that point??
@LibertyForward1 @scottpaton it is very dangerous, it's one of the reasons horizontal/flat roofs are very uncommon in Sweden.
@OliverUv @LibertyForward1 @scottpaton
A lot of flat roofs went in Scotland during the two big snow Winters of 2010. Less than a quarter of that lot though!
@OliverUv @LibertyForward1 @scottpaton It's odd, most of Montreal in the city is flat. I mean, periodically you want to go up and shovel if off, but the old building's roofs are bonkers strong.
@OliverUv @LibertyForward1 @scottpaton Like our house has the flat roof structure which is then tied into a full pitched roof structure which then transfers the load to the walls and one point load straight down the center of the building.
@scottpaton bow on earth does that roof support all that weight. My roof buckles with a few twigs and heavy rain.
@scottpaton I pronounce him an honorary Canadian!
@scottpaton @gedeonm Yay for Quincy!!! Although it’s been many years, I’ve been there many many times for High Sierra Fest. So much fun! We had friends in Crescent Mills. Such a beautiful area with beautiful people. I can only imagine the madness and craziness this is causing…
@scottpaton wow 😯 that looks really heavy!! Be careful
@scottpaton @gedeonm OK. That is legitimately a shit tonne of snow on that roof 😳
@scottpaton Reminds me of the Blizard of '78.
@scottpaton
Holy shit. He can be happy that the roof is still Ok.
Can get pretty worse with starting rain. Water will accumulate in the snow.
Cross fingers for you guys.
@scottpaton I shoveled my roof many times over the years, but snow was never more than crotch deep! He needs at least a roof rake to start with!
@scottpaton But there’s NO climate change, right?! Move along, deniers; nothing to see here. 😕😢
@scottpaton @mmasnick
Apparently it is literally more snow (measured by water content) than previously recorded, it has been a record breaking winter.
@scottpaton Pretty amazing, a friend of ours with a cabin that is near Graeagle has a very "pointy" roof so this much snow cannot easily accumulate. Still I suspect the snow managed to get up to the roof line at some point.
@scottpaton that’s so important to do. Even in high snow areas most roof trusses are only engineered to withstand a design load within historic parameters and houses can collapse under an unprecedented snow accumulation. One year in Fairbanks we had this problem and people would have to get up on their roofs a couple of times a week to shovel . Removed snow piled up around the walls and blocked windows, it was like living in a cave.
@scottpaton Holy crap. I used to live there. Ironically, moved up to AK, and we're having nothing but sunny days. Climate change is freaking scary
@scottpaton ...how has the roof not collapsed yet?
@scottpaton does that ever exceed the load bearing capabilities of the roof?
@scottpaton wish w had reservoirs to store all that precipitated run-off
@scottpaton Oh wow. That is some childhood dream, while it might be a grown ups nightmare.
@scottpaton we are going to get some snow here in southern New England. Even if it is two inches I'm posting this
@scottpaton You win the best shoveling shot award. That's insane.
@scottpaton stop with the drama, Karen. I shovel snow off my ROOF all the time in Sullivan county, Pennsylvania.
@scottpaton its amazing that that building still stands!
@scottpaton that’s a lot of snow! Oh my.

@scottpaton

Not that severe but when I had a chalet in the Pocono mtns I used to go out a few times a day, while it was snowing and sticking to use a ladder and long broom. If it is caught early and often a strong leaf blower helps to keep the accumulation down too. My roof was pretty steep but it helps to keep gutters clean of snow.

@scottpaton

That's scary deep.

@KissAnne

@randynose @scottpaton 😮😮😮 Oh no!! That's amazing how much they've got snow in California!

@KissAnne

I think most of the places that got hit hardest were places that got snow part of the Year anyway.

@scottpaton

@scottpaton California homes have stronger roofs than Minnesota Metrodome. Confirmed.
@scottpaton
The moment you realize the shovel isn’t big enough.
