If I were well, I would create a carry-out/drive-thru only soup restaurant. Soup by the pint or quart in eco-friendly containers, made with only seasonal, local produce and dairy. Challah rolls or cornbread muffins to accompany. Glass bottled drinks. No plastic. Bamboo spoons. Discounts if you bring your own non-plastic spoon during lunch hour.

Someone use this idea. Make it real. I’ll even share recipes.

@amaditalks

You need to make Cawl for this idea 🙂

@simonzerafa that would be a new idea to most people where I live, for sure.

@amaditalks

They will enjoy it, trust me! 🙂👍

Think stew without a gravy base so more like a soup. Lots of vegetables and very warming and filling.

Our recipe adds a small amount of fresh chillies to add a bit of spice 😁

@simonzerafa the recipes I saw looked lovely.
@amaditalks this is a brilliant idea! I’d be a regular customer.
@shacker I would gladly welcome all soup lovers.
@amaditalks @anildash bring your own container. the soup interface is just a big hose sticking out of the wall.
@mendel self serve soup, sold by weight rather than volume, like the FroYo stores where you dispense your own and add your own toppings? You may be onto something! I’m not sure about the hose interface though.
@amaditalks At several month into "the shutdown" a group on Pittsburgh's Northside did several (walk in) soup kitchens where they were selling quarts to those who could afford it, and the money raised was giving it to those in need. And they were delivering too. Different motivation, but your toot reminded me of them.
@run_atalanta yeah, some of my friends were involved, and I think they used a couple of my recipes.
@amaditalks @Ideakat We had something rather like this in Portland, but it was delivery by bicycle rather than carry-out. It was called SoupCycle and it lasted for years but I believe it folded before the pandemic.
@daviddlevine oh, I love that. I live in Pittsburgh and sadly we are not a bicycle delivery system friendly city. Too many hills.
@amaditalks Portland is not exactly flat either! But I hear you. It was a very, very Portland thing.
@daviddlevine Is the Savor soup cart still in business? I used to work near them, and it was an always reliable lunch option.
@plarango I don't know it, but it looks like no.
@amaditalks My mother had an idea like that. I hope this happens for someone. She didn't think about the spoons or containers, but yes glass bottled drinks :)
The country you're accessing our site from is not on our allowed access list.

@avirr very cool! I like the mason jars.
@amaditalks unfortunately no challa or cornbread, but we do have a great spot for soup takeout! https://www.souppeddler.com/

@amaditalks I have to ask: why the hate against plastic cutlery and crockery? If they are made from reasonably sturdy plastic and reused I would argue that they're significantly better for the environment than e.g. glass, no?
@dinyar because the concept is take away only and plastic equals garbage. And there is no plastic that is better for the environment than glass, even if designed for long-term reuse, because eventually it will meet the end of its life span.
@amaditalks right, but glass isn't particularly great either, particularly if it isn't reused (i.e. just washed and refilled as opposed to recycled). My understanding was that the ideal were reusable plastic bottles, because they were light and didn't cause as many emissions during transport while at the same time being sturdy enough to go through several reuse cycles. Anyway, I just wanted to say I do like the concept a lot even if I had questions about the details. :-)
@amaditalks Soup can be interesting from an inventory perspective since many of the nicer ones shouldn’t be kept to the second day. Probably want to have a backbone of recipes that can be frozen, reheated (standards like they have at Panera), then have daily limited availability ones. My brother in law was pit master at an OK BBQ place and it’s amazing to me that “until we run out” is totally fine for some concepts.
@amaditalks Come to #Austin where we have this. https://www.souppeddler.com
