In Utrecht, NL people have been falling into a pond because duckweed has been stressed by the cold and turned it red an looks exactly like a cycle path.
@CriticalCupcake @jeffjarvis TICPFIO (Trespass In the Cycle Path, Find Out)
@CriticalCupcake I feel bad about it, but I find this hilarious 🤣
@CriticalCupcake hahaahaaaHaaaaa 🤣 Sorry, maar dit is zo grappig 🥲
@CriticalCupcake The two guys standing on the sidewalk seem unimpressed.

@CriticalCupcake

@cinebox

Seeing that guy having fallen in the water makes me wonder what the most dangerous depth of water is to fall into.

I suspect there's a local maximum around 15-20 cm, where it's not deep enough to break your fall much, but is definitely deep enough to easily drown in if you can't stand up. 🤔

@squeakyears @CriticalCupcake The low temperatures don’t help right now. Someone reportedly fell in and got such a shock it triggered an epileptic seizure.
@CriticalCupcake the duckweed is evolving to lure humans into the pond; this is not the apocalypse I expected.
@CriticalCupcake Even now after you've told me about it, I still think I should be able to walk on it. My brain can't register it as dangerous.
@CriticalCupcake didn't they fall into it before too when it was green and people thought it was a patch of grass

@CriticalCupcake

Die betreten jetzt auch keinen Radweg mehr zu Fuß!😉 😁 😁

@CriticalCupcake Red weed? I'd be on the look out for Martian war machines if I was them.
@CriticalCupcake ouch, it's *exactly* the right color, and why is the crossing sign *in* the canal? really easy mistake to make. 😬
@tshirtman @CriticalCupcake
It's not a crossing sign. It's a 'you're about to step into water' sign.
@GilaMonster @CriticalCupcake oh right, i guess i would have ended up in the canal for lack of attention then 😆
lb: critical support for the duckweed in its quest to moisten all lawyers and bailiffs
like seriously, is there any building in Rijnsweerd whose purpose is not law-related?
@CriticalCupcake i am not at all sure whether this ⬆️ really has anything to do with #ClimateChange, but as it appears to be a consequence of unseasonably warm weather followed by unseasonably? cold weather, and as it’s certainly the first time I have heard of this happening, I definitely do have to tag #ClimateDiary here 😀
@CriticalCupcake PS rather intrigued by the two people looking at the person in the water. Why are they just standing there, chatting, not helping them out?

@CriticalCupcake I would definitely walk right into this. “Yeah, honey, we can cross right here…shploop!”

I got brushed by trams twice in Amsterdam (sober). Walking while tourist. 🤦‍♂️

@CriticalCupcake
Thank you. I shall not complain about Mondays anymore. At least this hasn't happened to me yet.
@CriticalCupcake

Hahaha 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@CriticalCupcake would never happen in Germany. Such a wide bike path would be immediately used for car parking.
@CriticalCupcake and this is why you shouldn't walk on cycle paths

@CriticalCupcake is there no end to the damage that duckweed does?

(I'm an aquarist, so my dislike of duckweed is unending)

@CriticalCupcake Clearly, guardrails are needed. Also, the person that fell in should find better friends.
@CriticalCupcake Haha! Supermooi bij ons in business parkje Rijnsweerd!
@CriticalCupcake Haha, this takes me back. Our dog fell for this one (green algae looking like grass) in a Dutch canal once. 😂
@CriticalCupcake The one thing that makes it clear that it's not a Dutch cycle path is that there's no one cycling on it.
@CriticalCupcake I can only imagine their difficulties in fossil shops trying to buy potatoes.

@CriticalCupcake

😮 I almost tripped a fire alarm today walking through the wrong door on the way to get my haircut. Healing thoughts and prayers to everyone who fell into the pond.

@CriticalCupcake @Fischblog

In Germany this would not happen because there are no cycle paths.

@CriticalCupcake That sign kind of makes it worse. I wouldn't expect anything but solid land underneath a post like that.

@CriticalCupcake
This is not a terribly uncommon problem in the Netherlands it seems. Here is a pond in a park in Enschede.

The sign says:

WATCH OUT!!! pond

@CriticalCupcake What if a young kid falls in? Seems rather unsafe.

@CriticalCupcake

See @RantyHighwayman, this is why cycle paths should be green not red. No wait! Blue! Yes blue! Aaaaaaaaaaiii

@CriticalCupcake  haha I enjoyed this very much

@stux
@CriticalCupcake

mastodon.lol is down :(
I hope it wasn't shut down early...

@CriticalCupcake As they say in German, "sie sind nicht utrecht" (aufrecht): they aren't upright.

(No, nobody says that; I just made it up going for the bad pun.)
