Discord is getting in on the "AI" trend with testing of new features utilizing user data scraping, potentially for training a large language model. To disable the only settings which might affect your data being utilized for this, go to the Privacy & Safety section of your Settings. From there, toggle off both "Use data to improve Discord" and "Use data to customize my Discord experience."
@Texan_Reverend I cannot thank you enough for sharing this how-to
@dunny0 It's such a non-stop barrage of opt-out, forced, or undisclosed data scraping nowadays that whenever I find a way to mitigate any of it, I want to make sure others also know.

@Texan_Reverend

to opt outStop using #Discord.

It'll immediately opt you out of all their other bullshit, present and future!

@Texan_Reverend Those settings seem to have been there for a few years now, since I have them already disabled. The only new thing might be that they want to use it for "AI" training. And if you don't have it disabled already, they should have a lot of data from you by now.
@rommudoh @Texan_Reverend Yes this is true, AND there's nothing wrong with not wanting them to use your data going forward.
@Texan_Reverend like it's gonna stop them from doing that anyways, unless somebody REALLY complains about that, which I highly doubt
@Texan_Reverend no, that’s just your consent for personalized ads. Samsung uses the same misleading bullshit lingo in their phones.
@Texan_Reverend I'll take "Application settings that do absolutely nothing" for 500, Alex.
@Texan_Reverend thanks for the tip! ✌️

@Texan_Reverend keep in mind:

We may continue to use previously collected data to help us understand and improve our products.Source

@Texan_Reverend To opt out of this, leave Discord. We do have @matrix after all for God’s sake.
@Texan_Reverend You gotta click twice and then a popup again if you REALLY want this. Annoying, hostile design.

@Texan_Reverend Discord has been predicting user ages biweekly since September 2022, unsure on what they use to predict ages. Seems like they use AI to get a better understanding of users age, I don’t think it’s using image recognition as I don’t often send photos on Discord aside from my cat.

Still very intresting to find out!

last boost boosted without verification

@Texan_Reverend

"... might..." you and your information are going to be abused, you probably cant protect yourself, but do this to take away the helpless anger."

Or quit, move home to mastodon.

@Texan_Reverend oh my stars. Is this opt-out? That has to be illegal, right? I mean AI training with your data _by default_
This kind of things should be at the very least Opt-in, disabled by default.
@Texan_Reverend sadly I don’t think it’s prefect still
@Texan_Reverend I'm curious about Guilded or Matrix, and whether these are viable alternatives for people wanting to leave Discord
@Catwoman69y2k @Texan_Reverend I am doing some research on this. I'd really like some #alternatives to #rocket.chat and #Jitsi. Especially if it has some form of #TTRPG integration.
@tikke @Texan_Reverend I think that Discord and Guilded are very much similar in what their mechanics are (e.g. the idea of opening a server and then creating channels (rooms) that relate to sub topics. The major difference being that Guilded abd Matrix chat doesn't have anything like Nitro. Maybe Discord has some extras that these don't but not big deal things, in my book.
@Catwoman69y2k @Texan_Reverend i've been using Matrix for over a year and it's an entirely different experience from discord. instead of getting blasted by a high-pressure hose of random BS, it's an actual social platform!

@shitpostalotl @Texan_Reverend I have begun to just start using it more. Back in 2017-2019 I had tried using Matrix for a collaboration group. Sadly, I couldnt get the team to leave Slack but I thoight about its potential.

So far I have run into furs.chat and cyberfurz homeservers. The former seems to only have a general room but I'm hoping they will break out some tertiary channels for specific side interests and cross-over interests

@Texan_Reverend And there goes Discord... Ripping their... pants... again.

@Texan_Reverend

I don't mind them having AI chatbots.

The fact they took away the "we don't keep your video feed" from calls and streaming in the privacy policy, that part bothers me. And hopefully clicking these boxes prevent them from storing or using that data

@Texan_Reverend This is also scary given that Facebook recently used messenger data to prosecute abortion seekers in red states!! We all need to protect our data!!
@Texan_Reverend Is it just me, or did all y'all have to click to toggle it off twice instead of just once?
@trishalynn I've seen multiple people report that behavior, yes.
@Texan_Reverend noted. Is this on a by-client basis or a by-account basis though? I need to know just in case I gotta do it to everything I'm logged into or not
@JamesTDG They're account-level settings. Change them once and they're adjusted everywhere. However, you may want to close and restart Discord on each device to make sure the settings update properly.
@Texan_Reverend Wouldn't have thought this through to do this on my own, I've disabled this now, thanks for the tip!
@Texan_Reverend Those settings have been around for a long time. I'm sceptical about the relevance of these settings to their new AI features and the upcoming privacy policy changes.

@Texan_Reverend these toggles do next to nothing to stop discord tracking you, as it is also stated in the settings that discord has to store data to provide the "basic features" including private messages (jesus christ).

they only way at this point is to leave discord all together, and join better platforms like matrix or something called "revolt", wich looks very promising in providing an open source discord-like experience
