This is an updated and categorized version of my messy first attempt last month: https://mastodon.social/@drewharwell/109551525081139777.

I'll add as more journalists join, as is happening all the time. Please flag any I've missed.

(To make it easier to follow across instances, I use Mastodon Link, a free extension available for Chrome and Firefox: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/mastodon-link/nlfdgcdfjnobjocicnddjghdbmgglame / https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/mastodon-link/)

Mastodon Link

Extension to make it easy to visit mastodon profiles from your instance

@drewharwell Is the Washington Post working on creating its own instance? I thought I saw a post mentioning the possibility a couple weeks ago, but nothing since.
@pelikans The Post is working on a couple Mastodon pursuits. I've not heard that a full instance is one of them, but we're just in the early stages of experimentation and active work.
@drewharwell I found the post:
@drewharwell Then found this one I hadn’t seen.

@drewharwell

Kinda looks like your company should set up a server. 😁

@drewharwell It's already been mentioned down thread, but +1 to the idea of having WaPo run their own instance. Bump the char limit of posts up to what you need, to post your news, and off to the races.

You get verification, a wider audience, and pull more influence from the other platform. Win!

Audience vs effort will always be a chicken and egg problem. Please just pay IT to hire a full time head count to set up and manage an instance for you.

Thanks.

Thank you for posting this! I've been looking for more people to follow, and I love the Post's coverage already.
@drewharwell It's interesting how many tech journalists are on this list and how few covering other (broader?) areas. I wonder what this says about Mastodon and reach it has outside of tech.
@drewharwell WP sports writers here at all? I haven't noticed sports Twitter (or the version from the sports I follow) show up here at all yet.
@dmercer Not that I know of. Maybe in time. I'd like to follow a bunch of them.

@drewharwell

Thanks for the list! I wish that more Washington Post journalists were ACTIVE on Mastodon. Many of these accounts aren't exactly posting regularly.

Also, when is WaPo going to create its own Fediverse instance? You'd think news orgs would be thrilled at having an alternative to social media that is owned by people like Elon Musk who bans journalists from Twitter and makes news orgs bow to his wishes to avoid being banned.

Disappointed at how cowardly the media has been.

@drewharwell Most of these accounts are not active. Of the 30 accounts you list, only 14 have posted at all within the last week:

@geoffreyfowler
@JosephMenn
@jeremybmerrill
@markseibel
@Shira
@tatumhunter
@taylorlorenz
@willoremus
@pbump
@perrybacon
@andrewvandam
@databae
@teddyamen
@gbrockell

...and only a small few are truly "on Mastodon."

It's great that WP journalists are doing something with Mastodon, but so far it is not many and not much.

The Impact Of Social Media On News and Journalism [Infographic]

Social media and journalism are becoming increasingly integrated and causing some issues in the industry. This infographic shows you what to be aware of.

Student Resources
@drewharwell wow, that is a lot of tech journalists and very few arts, style, books, sports and metro

@drewharwell Thanks for sharing the list.

Here is a link to a CSV file that can be imported to your following list if you prefer doing it that way.

@drewharwell Appreciate this! Fast way to get my home feed jumpstarted.
@drewharwell
What about Arts and Entertainment?

@drewharwell Thanks, I appreciate this list.

On a related note, how the **** hasn't Mastodon figured out how to make following easier?

This is one heck of a tedious task, to click each open... Isn't following the most important part of social media, it should be easy right?

@drewharwell I appreciate the list but won't follow if they're not posting in the fediverse.
