Americans: WTF is a Tax Return???
@mayaisloading it’s like if you don’t make a lot of money the government will give some of the taxes you already paid back to you.
@mayaisloading basically, we have to do a bunch of forms to figure how much exactly we owe in tax, and if that's less than what we've payed already, then we get some money back! Theoretically the government could do it for us, but the Tax Company lobby (TurboTax, Innuit, etc.) has made it impossible for the IRS to offer that service
@mayaisloading the idiot tax we impose upon our government
@mayaisloading
A large bill where you have to guess the amount to pay and if you guess wrong people come and take all your possessions and throw you on jail.

A "Tax Return" isn't a refund to an individual, but perhaps a reminder that the government claims to own everything and wants an accounting of its investments, before deciding how much it will demand to be returned to it.
"Tax Refund" happens when the government gets caught taking too much money and gives a little bit back, or when someone tricks the IRS into thinking that they took too much.
Many might view the government as an abusive partner in a dysfunctional marriage.
