*sound of mother's voice, chatting away on the phone*
*BEEP BOOP BOP BIP BEEP BIP BOOP BOP BUP BIP BIP BIP*
*sound of mother shouting up the stairs at you.. again*
@djlink
Oh my sweet summer child
@BadDogMonkeyboy @djlink There must be a subtle childhood conditioning here, because I was very happy to patiently sit and watch that (and imagine the sounds too, obviously!) , but very disappointed when it didn't actually start the game once finished.
@BadDogMonkeyboy I can still recognise a SCREEN$ loading by audio alone
@BadDogMonkeyboy @djlink Not here in the US, though… the Apple II dominated the 8-Bit Wars here, and most of them had floppy drives (due to Woz’s ludicrously cheap implementation). The first time I saw a Datasette for a C64 as a kid, I was blown away… software? On *cassette tapes!?* What madness! 😅
@djlink I couldn't find a picture of Telix or ProComm Plus actually in the process of dialing, so this will have to suffice.
@djlink back in my day we had the telegram and we liked it
@djlink iiiiiiiiiiiiiii uuuuuuuuuuu wongdawongdawongdawong

@raphink @djlink

This.
I can connect just by whistling in the phone 😄

@djlink my wife and I used to call this "talking to Mr. Bing Bong." As in, "I'm sorry that you kept calling and the phone was busy. I was talking to Mr. Bing Bong."
@djlink
Once I was able to imitate that sound so well on a phone I was getting "somewhere" in the protocol negotiation. I suppose I may be a rare case of "modem a cappella" 😆

@djlink

And those who can't "read/hear" this image because there is no description.

@djlink and those who know to add ATM0 to the unit string…
@djlink calming ocean sounds
The sound of the dialup, pictured

If you ever connected to the Internet before the 2000s, you probably remember how it sounded. But what do these sounds mean?

absorptions
@djlink And one can hear it again. Just try https://learn.adafruit.com/adding-basic-audio-ouput-to-raspberry-pi-zero/pi-zero-pwm-audio I spent our recent "hackweek" designing https://github.com/fridrich/pi-zero-analog-audio not to hear it any more :)
Adding Basic Audio Ouput to Raspberry Pi Zero

To keep the Raspberry Pi Zero as low cost and small as possible, the Pi foundation didn't include a 3.5mm audio jack. There's also no breakout pads for the audio output. This made us a little :( at first but then we thought "hey you know, we can probably figure out how to get audio out with a little hacking!

Adafruit Learning System
@djlink This was how I used to hear it:
@djlink *listens* What the--? This isn't a 14.4 handshake! I need to look up a different ISP number!

@djlink genuinely don't miss it.

though, I had a dog-shit slow modem connected via parallel port, so that might color how fondly I remember it.

was lucky and lived in a neighborhood with early cable internet. never looked back.

@djlink 😡why did you have to remind me of that sound?
@djlink i can.. but i dont want to ! NOT ANYMORE ! PLEAAAAASE ! 😪
@djlink this made me wince in agony. Thanks. @donmelton
@djlink Can't believe I went and hunted this down to relive it after all the hours and hours I spent tormented by failure to connect because the system was constantly busy.

The Sound of dial-up Internet

YouTube
@djlink people should CW the stuff that makes us olds feel old. Please?
@djlink @NewtonMark I miss the sound of modems singing to each other, before going full metal.

@djlink

2 types of people, those who could hear this image but can't hear anymore, and those who can't. :>

@djlink @patrice I can hear it, and worked for AT&T Bell Labs when it was a common sound. But I definitely don’t miss it 🙂
@djlink I got pretty accurate at being able to tell the speed that I connected at just by listening.
@djlink almost immediately started ringing in my head.
@djlink I think that's 10 types of people

@shawnwildermuth

@djlink

11 types of people...

@carlosramos @djlink Only 10 who can and who can't hear the sound. What's the 11rd reason?

@shawnwildermuth
Those who think they hear.

Ok, it's a bad joke.
@djlink

@djlink you mean old people?
@djlink I wasn't allowed online until we could get cable. Even local calls here charged by the second, so my mother knew it would be expensive.
@helle @djlink The memories of way too many fighting arguments over the telephone bill… yeah, something I definitely don’t miss.
@djlink
Oh those were the days...
@djlink why is my Zyxel 14400 only connecting at 4800
@djlink We called that sound The Devil’s Air Raid.
@djlink it's a sound/noise that will never leave me.
