Was craving some nostalgia so I installed Unreal Tournament 2k4 for the first time in well over a decade and figured I'd play single player a bit to see how rusty modern shooters have made me.

After getting called a "bitch" a "whore" and told I "play like a girl" by the bots, I leaned back in my seat and remembered that nostalgia was pretty misogynistic.

Turned off the "mature taunts" and stuck to single player, but the game has a bit of a sour taste to it now. Like, compared to my revisiting of Blizzard games, this is pretty tame, and I still had some fun with it.

Just, stuff like this makes me scared to revisit things I used to love.

@Gwendolyn

I always liked Unreal Tournament better than the 2k line. It's been a while since I touched either one and I completely forgot about the taunts.

Honestly, the taunts were already tedious back in the day. I get that they were trying to simulate actual human opponents, lumps and all, but I also remember kicking people out of my games when they were toxic, so maybe the wrong part of the "faux human" experience to include.
