Things are headed in such a scary direction right now, and I don't know how to cope with it https://abcnews.go.com/US/transgender-care-targeted-adulthood-states/story?id=97004686
Transgender care targeted into adulthood in these states

Several states have introduced bills to restrict care access for young adults.

ABC News
And this is what Republicans would absolutely do on a federal level if given the opportunity. I'm scared, and I know all of this is only made worse by the unending media debate over the legitimacy and authenticity of trans people. It's been getting worse and worse, and there's been such little push-back.
We need federal-level protections now. Because one this kind of stuff happens, it doesn't slow down. The anxiety of just... existing right now is a lot.

Because, again, this doesn't just stop with "Look, we're only banning it until 19, only banning it to 21, only banning it until 26" stuff.

They want to ban the ability for trans people to transition *at any age.*

Again, you do not have to understand trans people (or even like trans people) to understand that the anti-trans movement is wrong here, that what they're pushing is a gross violation of human rights.

Please push back on politicians and pundits advancing the eliminationist anti-trans agenda.

Jesus fucking Christ

The second half of this is just as idiotic.

People who do this shit are not actually trying to be helpful.

The only reason anyone knows the name Lia Thomas is because right-wing freaks decided to pretend to care about "fairness in women's sports." She's not a "hero to the trans community," she's just a person living her life. I fucking hate bigoted shitstains like this person in my replies.

Also, the two sides of the whole "the children" thing are this:

Side 1: wants to let decisions about medicine to be made by patients (and parents for minors, in some cases) and their doctors.

Side 2: wants to criminalize forms of health care it doesn't like.

If your takeaway is "Side 1 is extreme," then you're either dumb or you're pretending to be dumb.

@parkermolloy Side 2 also has a whole lot of anti-vaxxers on it. Who spend their time wanting decisions about medicine to be made by patients (and parents of minors) and their doctors...
@parkermolloy This site is infested with handwringing liberals who do not give a single fuck about our issues but just want to see a bunch of numbers next to a white guy with a blue tie. When we get genocided and wiped off the map liberals will be saying we didn't vote enough or our existence was "too extreme left" for the average American. We are so fucked.
@Lukako @parkermolloy Yup. The "Pride and rainbow bumper stickers, I support LGBTQ people...wait, no, not like that!i" crowd.

@parkermolloy It's easy to play libertarian until it's time to do libertarian things.

What are your thoughts on the gov't interfering with other medical decisions, for instance, vaccination?

@elliswyatt

"Hey Bing, show me a disingenuous gotcha question"

@elliswyatt

"Hey Bing, what is whataboutism?"

@parkermolloy The only people the children need protection from are the ones trying to police their gender expression. Let them do their thing! It’ll be ok!
@parkermolloy if their "fairness in sports" angle was even remotely genuine, they'd stop backing Caitlyn Jenner from moving towards elected positions.
@parkermolloy I always wonder what these idiots think of circumcision; the entirely unecessary intimate surgerie mose US babies are subjected to because of religious preference. That not an issue for them? Or puberty blockers for girls who go through puberty too early etc...

@scottgal @parkermolloy Or absolutely unnecessary surgeries performed on intersex infants just to make them conform to binary sex, without ability to give consent or possibility to predict what gender will they eventually identify with.

I've never seen transphobe who would lobby against those, even if they provably cause harm. Which just shows what their agenda really is. It was never about "Medical procedures on kids".

@shine @scottgal In fact, the Republicans pushing the bills have been putting in carve-outs specifically to allow surgery on intersex babies.

@scottgal I believe I see the problem with this speculation: you used the word "think", and it seems to me that the lack of such on one "side" is at the base of these... "debates".

They don't care what the truth is; they just don't want to accept that the world is always changing, and will support anyone who gives them permission to be angry at someone else about it.

@parkermolloy

@parkermolloy yeah, what kind of parent listens to their children when they tell you that something is wrong?
Oh yeah, good parents.
@atwellorama @parkermolloy and the idea of “pushing” gender care on kids is absolutely wild. Nobody is strolling into the local Transition Depot. You need referrals, months (sometimes over a year) on waiting lists, often recommendations from a psychologist, and to say nothing of jumping through hoops upon hoops of insurance coverage. All the while emotionally bracing yourselves for someone in this long chain of care to have “concerns.” Its fucking exhausting.
@parkermolloy "As someone who has no intention of learning or helping, here's how you can appeal to meeeeee"
@parkermolloy that fucking username is the cherry on top.
@parkermolloy this is precisely why I don’t trust people with 🌊 in their bios.
@parkermolloy
Translation: “I don’t understand trans people but instead of actually talking to trans people or someone who does understand then I’m going to believe this utter nonsense that people who neither understand nor accept trans people are telling me.”
It’s a testament to modern civilization that people like this exist. In the past, they’d have been eaten by hyenas.
@parkermolloy as soon as I saw “medical procedures for children” I knew this person either had malicious intent or is willfully ignorant
@parkermolloy our cis "allies" and the liberals in power do not care. we are on our own.
@Lukako I'm really, really worried
@Lukako @parkermolloy
Whether we care or not (we do) we need to work together to make sure reactionary Republicans are kept out of power in DC.
We've succeeded in this for the last 3 federal elections.
We must continue to do so until bigoted MAGA extremists are no longer an electoral threat.
We definitely can do this.
Rooting them out of power in red states where they're entrenched by gerrymandering & voter silencing will be harder, but still quite necessary.
@parkermolloy I absolutely agree. When it comes to all sorts of human rights issues, I summarize my basic argument this way:
we don't get to choose the battle, we only get to choose our side.
Therefore if we support Trans human rights then we must also support their battle wherever it may occur - in sports or in schools or in any other arena where trans people are fighting.
@parkermolloy it's so weird to me that the anti-trans (and other anti-queer) folks bother to give a shit. What possible harm could it do me? I only even need to be an "ally" because those assholes are trying to hurt people I love.
@acdingman these same people are enemies of freedom in every era. The targets of their hate change, but the pattern of hateful behavior remains the same.

@blherrou @acdingman

Yes, they care because its instrumental to their pursuit of power. Fascism is a flexible set of techniques, employed cynically and opportunistically, for demagogues to build power within a liberal democracy. Targeting minority groups is textbook.

@Spicewalla @blherrou yes, I understand that for the leaders of such movements. I don't understand it for the mass of people who support them.

@acdingman @blherrou

Its about power for them too. For them, cultural supremacy is a currency more valuable than money.

If society isn't keeping other groups down, then that makes them a little bit less supreme. And since they aren't rich, it will feel like they have nothing if their group is no longer dominating other groups.

@acdingman @parkermolloy a lot of this connects to why it's popular with the Christian conservatives - they have a persecution narrative that needs an enemy no matter what.
@parkermolloy I admit that I don't understand trans people. However, I do understand that they're not hurting me or mine by being trans, and simple politeness says to address them by whatever pronoun they wish to be addressed by, and treat them according to whatever gender they choose to present as. It's literally just a matter of good manners to treat them like they want to be treated.
@parkermolloy and what they seem to be missing is what “Freedom” and “The Pursuit of Happiness” really means. Freedom is personal. And each person needs to pursue their own form of it, whatever that is, and whatever makes them feel the most fulfilled and complete, so long as it doesn’t exploit others, or infringe on anyone else’s pursuit of the same.
@parkermolloy
I have only very limited knowledge of the subject but from what I understand, if you are sure you are going to transition, the earlier the better, both phisiologically & psychologically. Putting artificial age restrictions is counterproductive.
As to their claims of "grooming," nobody is trying to convince kids it is cool. Legal constraints are ok.
With all their ranting about "parents rights" they should gtfoh re:parent/trans child relationship and decisions.
@parkermolloy Trump already said tonight at his rally that if elected, he will sign an executive order to ban all transitions.
@parkermolloy the religious extreme has already pushed abortion rights to "not after 6 weeks" in some places, and they're transitioning to their next big fight. "Not before 18 years" sounds a lot like "not after 16 weeks", and their push is *always* in the direction of *never*.
@rusozoll Yep. They're using the same exact strategy for trans people as they used on abortion
@parkermolloy my preferred coping mechanism is to call for hanging these lawmakers upside down.
@parkermolloy It's fucking horrifying, and somehow I still have to hold down a job and everything while this shit is going on. This fucking sucks.
