I called the #NewYorkTimes and cancelled my subscription this morning--I have a #nonbinary child. I told the very nice lady I spoke to why I was cancelling, and asked her to pass on to management that they were putting kids like mine in danger. She said she would pass that along, then offered me the editorial department's phone number so that I could also call them and let them know why I'd cancelled.

I did indeed call & leave a message. The number is 212-556-3652.

#protecttranskids #trans

@jesscraven101 Please explain context. Don't really understand
@SF8910 there have been two letters with thousands of signatories sent to them in the last week asking them to do better on covering trans people and trans healthcare. Their coverage heretofore has been harmful and used in right wing talking points. They refused and doubled down by posting an editorial in support of JK Rowling, who is also notoriously anti-trans. So some are canceling their subscriptions in protest myself included.

@jesscraven101 @SF8910

This is why it is so dumb for a newspaper to have split reporting and opinion editorial boards. Their editorials are written by a completely different staff than writes their news stories, all the way up to the editors. There's no way to punish their editorial staff for its hurtful work without punishing the journalists who had no role in it at the same time.

This absurd business model needs to end.

@stevensrmiller @jesscraven101 @SF8910 In this case the complaint is also about the news side.

@aristofontes @jesscraven101 @SF8910

The editorial about Rowling by Pamela Paul was easy to find. It would be useful to have some links to anti-trans news coverage too, if you could post a couple. (Thanks in advance.)

@stevensrmiller The open letter to the Times from its own contributors cites a number of specific news pieces.

@jesscraven101
Thanks- left them a message letting them know how their editorial choices are making life harder for my trans relative and all in his community. Hope they get flooded by similar messages 👍🏻
@jesscraven101 please tell us more about the NYT story. I have a trans child myself, so I'm doing all I can to follow what happens in the LGBT world
@danielhammarberg it’s easier if you follow @ErinInTheMorn and read her recent posts. There’s a decent amount of backstory. She’s an incredible follow anyway, and her newsletter is a must-read.
@jesscraven101
I cancelled years ago. At least once a month I wish I had a subscription so I could unsubscribe again. This is another one of those times.
💕 to you and your child.
@BPetersWatral lol I’ve cancelled once or twice before and eventually Re-subscribed because of the work I do but this time I mean it. There’s plenty of other excellent coverage, including from The Guardian and a gazillion. Substack newsletters. No need for the times anymore.
@jesscraven101 @BPetersWatral
Sadly, the Guardian provides platform for TERFs too! I stopped going there.
@jesscraven101 Thanks for passing along the number -- I've just left a message, as well. I'm nonbinary and this bullshit is not okay.
@crystalvisits no it’s not. Glad you called. 💙
@jesscraven101 what did I miss?
@MarkBrigham just a bunch of super transphobic behavior by the New York Times.
@jesscraven101 You are a good person. Thank you for all that you do! 🙏🏼
@jesscraven101 Whoa - What did NYT publish? Link?
@shacker it’s a series of things —have you been following the letter from New York Times contributors about the Times’s terrible coverage of trans issues? And the Times’s response of publishing a piece in defense of J. K. Rowling?
@jesscraven101 No I have not read that. I'll google for it, thanks.
@shacker or read @ErinInTheMorn ’s recent posts. She’s been covering it closely.
@jesscraven101 I read the NYT's piece this evening. It seemed very balanced and even-handed. Not sure I see why people are upset at NYT for publishing it, but I think some people somehow see Rowling as "anti-trans," which is so unfair. I'll have a look at ErinInTheMorn's posts next.
@shacker @jesscraven101 what makes you think Rowling isn’t anti trans?
@jadeforrest @jesscraven101 Because she hasn’t said or done anything that is anti-trans — quite the opposite! She has always supported the underdog, and has made lots of trans-supportive statements.
@shacker @jesscraven101 if you talk with 10 trans people, I would guess 9 would say she is transphobic. So maybe look a little deeper into why they are saying that?
@jadeforrest @jesscraven101 I know they do, it’s true, and it’s sad. They say it because she won’t acknowledge they fully become the opposite sex. But she is still their ally. Trans people have millions of real and dangerous enemies - let’s save our ire for them, not for a person who has vowed to fight for their rights.

@shacker @jadeforrest @jesscraven101 She’snot our ally, period. She has NEVER fought for our rights, and is openly fighting against them alongside some truly terrible people and organizations.

Your dismissal of trans people’s experiences with her, along with trying to gaslight everyone here into believing she’s some kind of ally that she most provably is not, has been duly noted. You’re defending a raging bigot.

@shacker @jadeforrest @jesscraven101 Horseshit. She’s been vehemently anti-trans for years, and she’s cozying up to rightwing shit bags and literal neo-Nazis of late. JKR is absolutely no supporter or friend of the trans community, the LGBTQ community at large, or feminism for that matter. She’s an awful person.

@turboquokka @jadeforrest @jesscraven101

How are these not the statements of an ally?

“Trans people need and deserve protection.”

“I believe the majority of trans-identified people not only pose zero threat to others but are vulnerable.”

“I respect every trans person’s right to live any way that feels authentic and comfortable to them.”

“I feel nothing but empathy and solidarity with trans women who’ve been abused by men.”

@turboquokka @jadeforrest @jesscraven101

She has said she would march with trans people to defend their rights! How is that not an ally?

@shacker @jadeforrest @jesscraven101 Since you seem so intent on remaining intellectually ignorant, rather than actually listening to trans folks (or, y’know, doing the absolute bare minimum and Googling before you open your mouth), here’s just one of many articles written on her transphobia, complete with receipts.

https://www.thecut.com/2023/02/heres-what-j-k-rowling-has-really-said-about-trans-people.html

@turboquokka @jadeforrest @jesscraven101 Thanks for the links. I've spent the past few days trying to get to the bottom of whether the criticisms of her have merit. So far it's seemed very similar to how the right used to criticize her for trying to "lure kids into witchcraft." I thought the NYT defense of her was well-reasoned and even-handed, but I look forward to reading more. Gotta run, will read your links later.
@shacker @turboquokka @jesscraven101 I appreciate your interest in digging deeper and keeping an open mind.
@jadeforrest Of course! As the supportive parent of a fluid kid on hormones, I want to understand the subtleties of the conversation, for sure. I’ve been saddened to see a lot of people putting words in her mouth, and going after what appears to be the wrong target.
@turboquokka @jadeforrest @jesscraven101 That article at The Cut was excellent thanks, and gets right to the heart of why this is such a nuanced discussion / why it doesnt work to paint Rowling with a simple brush of fear or hatred. We may not agree with all of her conclusions (I certainly don’t!) but it’s also not accurate or fair to call her transphobic. Let’s save that language for the real haters, who are doing the real damage out there.

@shacker @jadeforrest @jesscraven101 Still think I’m full of shit? Cool. Here’s what GLAAD has to say about it.

J.K. Rowling - GLAAD Accountability Project

@shacker @jadeforrest @jesscraven101 She tweeted that trans women should have the legal presumption of innocence removed and be considered rapists. If that is not anti-trans, I don't know what is.
@jesscraven101 - bravo on all counts. Thanks for doing the work.
@jesscraven101 I cancelled yesterday. We must show them their words/actions have consequences... too often it is paid with the lives of our most innocent.
@jesscraven101
Should the writers for the NYT editorial page be shot on sight? Opinions differ.
We present both sides.
@jesscraven101
You just gave me another reason to cancel my @NYTimes subscription. "Both sides" is a reasonable editorial policy only when one side isn't morally indefensible.
@jesscraven101, thank you for doing this. People who have not met non-binary kids have no idea that these kids’ gender perceptions aren’t just whims or fantasy, but are baked-in features of the children.
@suavebones yup. And once you stop questioning their identity and just celebrate it you realize it’s a wonderful gift to both parties.
@jesscraven101 I would do the same, had I ever signed up for a subscription. My transgender daughter deserves so much better than the NYT editorial section.
@jesscraven101 What will you read on the throne?
