Norfolk Southern:

-Helped kill a safety rule to upgrade outdated braking systems

-Fought off a shareholder initiative to mitigate risks of transporting hazardous materials

-Cut thousands of employees despite the safety risks of understaffing

Atrocious corporate greed.

@rbreich What has the #BidenAdmin been doing about all the mess 45 caused?
@dustcircle @rbreich 45 left us just 2 steps away from ruin. I imagine President Biden has had a devil of a time trying to prioritize everything and obtaining bipartisan support from an obstinate GOP.

β€˜32 Nasty:’ Rail Workers Say They Knew the Train That Derailed in East Palestine Was Dangerous

A freight train carrying toxic chemicals derailed 50 miles outside Pittsburgh, forced thousands to evacuate, and created a toxic cloud. Workers knew the train had safety issues.

@rbreich
It’s not to much to ask, but the corruption runs too deep. Greed will always win over humanity unfortunately.
@rbreich to be fair, the trains they're running are ridiculously long and heavy, and everyone involved says that it's just not possible to stop that many tons quickly, and that THAT is one of the biggest dangers there is because of all the follow-on effects of a huge train derailing. Yes, upgrading brakes would be good, but we don't have magical brakes. Shortening trains & running more of them would be far far more effective, although both would be best.
@masukomi @rbreich As all cars have their own breaks, it should not make much of a difference how long the train is. Except the breaks are not applied quickly in the whole train. However, that would fall in the upgrade brakes department.

@rbreich

In the first place, the priority of capitalism is profit above all other considerations; in the second, American corporations have legal personhood. The toxic combination of these two factors creates an extremely wealthy, powerful and psychopathic entity whose prime impulse is to increase profits.

@rbreich Rail lines should all be state owned and aim for safest control standards. Which in turn would require trains to support these standards. Roads are owned by the state.

@rbreich Is that really so much to ask?

Yes, according to Congress & Biden (and every other occupant of the Oval Office)

@rbreich I've beard about this alot, because I love in a 100 mile radius of the accident, I've been worried to drink tap water
@rbreich But can't Buttigeg just restore the Obama era rule? What is preventing him from doing that ?

@rbreich I wonder if it is possible to find even one owned share of railroad stock within 10 miles of this accident site.

I also wonder if it is possible to find even one republican who starts voting Democrat within 10 miles of this accident sight.

Keep voting against your own self interests republicans. Sick cult.

@rbreich this is so distressing on every level
@rbreich They want it both ways. A regulation to report toxic chemicals going through their state via rail AND "small government". They are mutually exclusive. The regulations say they must report "highly toxic substances" not "toxic substances". These substances were considered to be toxic NOT highly toxic.
@rbreich Criminal greed. Investigate and prosecute.
