Norfolk Southern:

-Helped kill a safety rule to upgrade outdated braking systems

-Fought off a shareholder initiative to mitigate risks of transporting hazardous materials

-Cut thousands of employees despite the safety risks of understaffing

Atrocious corporate greed.

@rbreich to be fair, the trains they're running are ridiculously long and heavy, and everyone involved says that it's just not possible to stop that many tons quickly, and that THAT is one of the biggest dangers there is because of all the follow-on effects of a huge train derailing. Yes, upgrading brakes would be good, but we don't have magical brakes. Shortening trains & running more of them would be far far more effective, although both would be best.
@masukomi @rbreich As all cars have their own breaks, it should not make much of a difference how long the train is. Except the breaks are not applied quickly in the whole train. However, that would fall in the upgrade brakes department.
