Public Service Announcement:

If the only way to reach your community for help is via #Discord I will most likely not use your open source project.

This is not a policy of mine, just an observation.

Use #matrix or anything else which is open!

@piegames

Honestly I feel like @domenkozar made a conscious decision about this and probably knows the arguments. So I didn’t mean to bother them directly with my opinion.

@maralorn @piegames @domenkozar I mean, that's why bridging exist, it's probably possible to mirror the channels on IRC or Matrix :) (and should be possible to achieve by anyone while asking Domen's permission?)

@raito @maralorn @piegames I'm all for making a bridge to Matrix.

How can we do that easily?

@domenkozar @maralorn @piegames I think running a matterbridge (there's a NixOS module IIRC) should be enough to have a basic bridge

@maralorn i personally hate how #discord has been the goto for communities. It can just become too chaotic and disorganized.

Single threads consisting of 100s of conversations of 1000s of messages, attempted to be organized in channels.

It was meant for gaming and designed for gaming, and it works for it. But similar to me not wanting an app for every single service, I dont want to join 100 #discord servers.

Forums are a way better method for communities to communicate with one another regarding specific topics and allow for comments and votes.

@maralorn I mean, observationally, most people don't have a matrix account, so ISTM I at best get to choose *which* people won't reach me…
@Merovius @maralorn it's a good point. But the point of matrix is to open up communication so people can use whatever client they want. Still a long way to go for that be easy and convenient, but I believe there are bridges for discord

@cubeofcheese @maralorn Sure. But that's a value judgement.

I have little opinion what people should choose. I tend to agree that Matrix is a good default option for FOSS. But use whatever makes sense for you, your community and your project.

Just intended to criticize the original framing as "just an observation".

@maralorn Does #matrix support such large group chats and most features you get from #Discord? I personally haven't even downloaded #matrix, because no one in my life uses #telegram or #signal and are all still blindly using #whatsapp.

@Stark9837 @maralorn Well, some rooms have 10s to 100s of thousands of users. But no real scalable voice channels yet. Otoh it is an open protocol, so anyone can add what they want. I.e. my client has custom emoji and the flagship one does not really.

In the end it is a lot about what you need. I suggest you give it a try, find what you like and find what you don't like and form an opinion from that. Maybe you find something you just add to your existing platform instead or you switch. :)

@deepbluev7 @maralorn Let's be realistic, are 100+ voice channels even scalable or useable? Only place where something like that doesn't end in disaster is when only 1 or 2 users actually speak, making the rest just be in a glorified #vlog, such as a classroom.
@Stark9837 Well, I partially used that as an example to demonstrate, that it depend on your community, what features you need. Not if one platform has more features or less.
@maralorn is the PSA different if "the only way to reach your community for help is via #Slack"? There are some of those as well.
@maralorn Same. I'm done with Discord for good.
@maralorn And get the matrix UI up to par with Discord in terms of ease-of-use, number of bots available, ease of management, default filters for illegal stuff etc. pp.
@maralorn Plus, beyond the open source-ness, Discord is just so unpleasant to use. It assumes you are a teen boy locked in the basement playing games twenty-four-seven, or some such. No, I don't want to buy your cartoony nitro incel add-on or whatever.
@tw
That sounds needlessly dismissive. But I agree that some of those features are annoying.
