Louis DeJoy plans to slash 50,000 USPS jobs.

Why in the world does Trump's postmaster general still have his job?

And how is this not a massive national scandal?
@rbreich Biden doesn’t have the power to fire him. And the board is also corrupt.
@richservo @rbreich DOJ has the power to prosecute him.
@dalias @rbreich I don’t think he’s committed any crimes tho. He’s just trying to tank the constitutionally guaranteed service.

@richservo @rbreich You don't get to be part of that kind of circle without having committed LOTS of crimes.

On top of that, various forms of interfering with postal service are federal crimes.

@richservo @rbreich Like seriously. I want DeJoy charged exactly like someone who robbed a mail truck or broke into a sorting facility and smashed the machines (which he basically did).
@dalias @rbreich much like Trump I'm pretty sure he's working within the written laws. So no matter what he does it can't be convicted of anything. That's how white collar criminals operate.
@richservo @rbreich That's less about operational smarts and more about the inconsistent, racist, and classist ways laws are enforced. There's no letter-of-the-law exception to let them do the things they do. It's just that the broad laws applied to people without power don't get applied to their actions.
@dalias @rbreich Exactly my point. They follow the "law" no matter how terrible it may be written.
@richservo @rbreich No, those enforcing the law just follow them. The law as written is so broad as to criminalize all sorts of things ordinary people do, and to give vast leeway to prosecute all kinds of roundabout ways of causing harm. But it's not applied except to certain classes of people.
@dalias @rbreich and all politicians are exempt. Yeah. That’s how it is.
@richservo @rbreich "If you enforced the law against politicians, it would be politically motivated prosecution which is undemocratic!" 🤔
@dalias @rbreich also, you can’t prosecute a sitting president! I then after he’s booted. What’s the point of prosecuting, he’s not president anymore. Let’s move on. Imagine if all criminals were set free because it was the past and we should move on.
@richservo
it's unclear to me what point is trying to be made here, and not just because the writing is unclear.
@dalias @richservo @rbreich it baffles me why he s still there

@richservo @dalias @rbreich DeJoy has large financial conflicts-of-interest regarding USPS. His holding the position of Postmaster General while having the investments he has in private shipping companies is against federal US laws - even if those laws have not been much enforced lately.

And DeJoy has been repeatedly implicated in and investigated for fraud and perjury.

@richservo @rbreich Biden had the opportunity to put enough governors on the board to fix the problem. he decided to hire "Democrats" that support dejoy.
@benda @rbreich and that’s the problem with a “centrist” president.
@richservo @rbreich he promised us nothing would fundamentally change. our mistake was thinking that 4 years of trump weren't fundamentally American.
@benda @rbreich The problem is, EVERYTHING NEEDS TO FUNDAMENTALLY CHANGE. The entire system is broken AF.
@rbreich considering the fact that our rural post office is chronically understaffed it makes no sense whatsoever.

@CatDragon @rbreich I'm in a small city's exurbs, and there's a dedicated package runner in a USPS van who we often see well into the evening.

My parents live in the suburbs of a major city and apparently their carrier has three routes.

They're surely cutting into the bone.

@rbreich because this is a Democrat agenda as well. There is no difference between D and R. Progressive to move and setup their party
@mmalekshahi60 @rbreich No, if you believe that then you are delusional.

@rbreich
Biden replaced 3 of the Governors in '21, and 2 last year. The votes are there.

This year, some of our neighborhoods had mail delivery drop back to as seldom as twice a week. That's WRONG!

Somethings happening here we are not privy to. The USPS has been set up to fail. Screw DeJoy, and pressure Biden to pressure the BOG, and hold the House W&M Committee to its oversight role!!!

EDIT!! follow this thread down. Brenda identifies the fly in the ointment.

@skydog @rbreich

Of course. DeJoy intentionally wants it to fail because he's invested in would be "private" solutions that would replace it.

@SaftyKuma @rbreich

DeJoy is the transparent part. Why this administration is letting him continue is opaque.

@skydog @rbreich Biden did in fact do this. but 2 of the 3 governors he appointed support Dejoy. Bc Biden is unbelievably incompetent.

@benda @rbreich

Any details on that? Which governors? I'm seriously interested, and want to look at their c.v.s

Members of the Board of Governors - Who we are - About.usps.com

The current members of the USPS Board of Governors.

@skydog @rbreich actually I was incorrect.
Biden nominated FIVE of the current members.

@benda @rbreich

I know that. What I'm asking is, which of those 5 are keeping DeJoy in? Obviously, any Trump appointee will favor DeJoy. Which Biden appointees are aiding and abetting? That's who we have to highlight, if a pressure campaign is to be attempted. Reward the righteous, and punish the sinners, right?

@skydog @rbreich of his Democratic appointees (one is Republican and one is independent, both part of the problem) Dan Tangherlini and Anton Hajjar are the straw that broke this camel's back. Hajjar will sometimes be portrayed as anti Dejoy but he only opposes some specifics and otherwise is in support of the austerity program being put in place.
noteworthy, Hajjar was former union official. which goes to show unions are not enough.
we need good unions with good leadership.

@benda @rbreich

Thank you. Excellent summation. I'm going to file that info.

I was a minor union official, at one point. I'm well acquainted with officials selling out.

@skydog @rbreich ah nice to meet you sir.
the problem with unions is only that it is, within this system, another corporation. if it falls in the wrong hands... well you already know.
nice talking to you. someone else here threw a fit because they seem to think trump being more incompetent makes Biden the son of God. and then he blocked me, because he probably couldn't defend his half witted argument.

@rbreich

The one who attempted to - and in some cases succeeded at! - destroying infrastructure with the goal of affecting ballot delivery?

Seems like a big oversight not replacing the bum.

@rbreich Because neo-lib Dems in office either don't care, or are ineffective.
@rbreich Exactly! Why does he have his job after messing with mail in voting etc ? A vibrant economy needs a postal service.
@rbreich
Why isn’t he in jail?
@rbreich Got to admit.....this one's a head-scratcher.
@rbreich Biden is one of them.
@rbreich Right? We definitely don’t want the postal service to become more efficient with our tax dollars.
@rbreich I've also been wondering how "I'll follow you to the Church" Milley still has his job. He was all AO while he was President and now he's okay? (AO = Agent Orange= Trump)
@rbreich It’s the same crap year after year - presidents change and congress changes but the overall agenda remains depressingly focused, why? Because with only minor differences, our two party system is just an elaborate good cop / bad cop routine. It started with Reagan and has gone downhill ever since.
‘Holding our mail hostage’: As issues with the US Postal Service persist, Summit County residents report problems accessing prescriptions and important mail

For the better part of a month, Andrea Godfrey has been wearing her mismatched blue and red gloves, a yellow beanie and a long dark coat indoors at her home in Silverthorne. Godfrey, 71, has lived in the same home for much of the past 50 years, ever since her parents built the place in…

@rbreich
When I stepped into my local post office I felt like I was going back to the 1960s. It is run poorly and slashing jobs isn't going to make it perform any better.
@rbreich Full-time postal carriers are union. Part-time are paid by work. DeJoy can ban hiring latter, forcing reduced delivery days. Government workers are civil servants. DeJoy would have to initiate Reduction-in- Force (RIF) which starts with retirement eligible workers. Saying he wants to cut 50,000 jobs needs details, but my guess is he can cut jobs by not replace retirees. Best solution Board of Governors fire DeJoy. It's too long overdue.
@rbreich wild. Doing his best to destroy a truly essential govt function
Effort Underway to Oust USPS Head DeJoy Over Failure to Electrify Vehicles

"DeJoy has to go right now," Representative Gerry Connolly, chair of the House Oversight Subcommittee on Government Operations, tweeted.

Newsweek
@rbreich Board of Governors schedule shows they're meeting today (next May 9th). Biden has majority to fire DeJoy, but if Board of Governors don't fire him now or i May, he'll be there until 2025 under new president if he doesn't resign first. God help us save the USPS. Biden beeds to send clear message he wants him out now.
@rbreich The post office here and others in this county are already an issue and he's planning to make it worse. How have we not fired him yet?

@rbreich and this explains why I haven’t gotten Prince’s self-titled sophomore album yet.

The package left Concord, the home of Charlotte Motor Speedway, on Monday and has inexplicably been in Oklahoma City and Dallas (both more than 900 miles away) since Wednesday instead of at my home!

@rbreich simple: first rule is to break it so that the vultures can rush in and pick the flesh off the bones
@rbreich can’t you get the answers to any of these questions. You know ppl🤔
@rbreich Why hasn't gangster Louis DeJoy been indicted for election interference and destruction of Federal property? After he removed mail boxes and destroyed sorting machines? There are two systems of justice, the connected vs. us, and I've lost faith in timid Merrick Garland.
@rbreich Especially after what he tried to do to sabotage the election and mail in votes. Democrats are sleeping while he's driving the USPS over a cliff.

From Dec 2021:

Biden has not said outright whether he wishes to oust DeJoy, although his press secretary, Jen Psaki, has said she is “deeply troubled” by his leadership. Even so, the president lacks the authority to dismiss the postmaster general. That power rests with the #USPS Board of Governors, a nine-member panel that can remove DeJoy with a majority vote. There were three vacancies on the board when Biden took office, and he filled those with Democratic

The US postmaster appointed under Trump is still raising alarm – but can he be stopped?

Biden has taken steps toward Louis DeJoy’s removal, but he lacks the authority to dismiss him

The Guardian
@rbreich The population only continues to go up, and he wants to reduce the USPS even though its workload will only ever go up?
@rbreich I totally forgot about that jackass.
@rbreich Exactly!!!!!! Why is he not gone….his tenure has been noted by Dems as being destructive and not helful to the pistal servvice or its cus…
