Question: do you find sections in #figma useful?

If so, why?
If not, why not?

@skuwamoto I find them endlessly helpful. They’re a distinct state for grouping in Figma unlike frames which have flexible use cases. They’re a notable visual grouping in Figjam. I only wish there would be more adnosticism between your files and other open canvas products like Freeform or obsidian canvas… I feel I never own my thoughts using your tools.
@skuwamoto as of now I don’t find them useful because they are too buggy and/or are not acting the way I was expecting. I started using them but ended up going back to no sections. [1] Selecting items in it acts kind of random. [2] you can’t move instances with the keyboards. [3] you can’t use auto layout on sections
@k would love to dig more into 1 and 2. Thanks!
@skuwamoto [1] When using sections it’s harder to select the top frame and I often end up selecting a child like the browser by mistake.
@k thanks! We will need to tweak those heuristics a bit
@skuwamoto [2] if I group the sections and move them with the keyboard only the instances are moving. But the top frames inside are not.
@skuwamoto On the side I use them all the time on FigJam. Because the things that bugs or not working the way I expect in Figma are irrelevant in FiJam

@skuwamoto They are very useful for grouping when you have a lot of screens/flows on one page.

I’ve never figured out how to use them in prototyping.

It would be nice to have some options for the size or formatting of the floating label to aid visual hierarchy when zoomed out.

@skuwamoto yes! I love them. My team had been using a sort of homemade version of this for clients and devs to be able to easily parse designs. Sections makes this easier and faster. Great feature.
@skuwamoto big sections fan here. I often draw up multiple flows on the same page of a file or have the same flow designed for multiple platforms and use sections to group and label them appropriately. I love that the frame titles inside stay visible
@skuwamoto
Have to ask my designers... 🤷🏻‍♂️ I'll try to get back.
@skuwamoto
Seems they're not using sections... Because they didn't know about that! 😅
Seems my team designer is happy to have found those!
Thanks Kuwamoto san. 👍🏻
@skuwamoto I recently started using them to group variants of the same view/page and it makes the canvas so much more scannable. Also got some positive feedback from the devs. One thing I wish it did is auto layout to automatically organise the frames within the section.
@skuwamoto I use sections to clearly group and label a set of mockups I want to share with stakeholders or hand over to engineering. Context: pages with a lot of content (often expanded over a long period of time), sometimes also different iterations/versions of the same stuff. Sections allow me to highlight a set of new mockups or specific product areas and provide a single shareable link to them.
@taimar @skuwamoto I wish more designers would structure things like this in Figma. So much easier to find your way around large files.
@skuwamoto Recently I started using them more to group flows together and name them. I am also experimenting with giving them a semantic background and border color to show the status (e.g. if it’s green it’s good to go)
@skuwamoto I do use them, generally to separate distinct sets of frames (especially in my pattern library. Occasionally I use them in a project to highlight distinct areas or frames I want to call to attention. Are they essential? Probably not.
@skuwamoto ngl I keep forgetting about them (even though I shouldn’t)
@skuwamoto yes, we love the structure AND no, we would love them to be ignored in the diff view in branches. We use them for our spec files and the devs have a hard life to see the diffs if it shows the entire section and they need to zoom in.
@skuwamoto I find them very useful, as they help keep things tidier. But they are missing an important feature — AL :-)
