I wish the IRS would just take my money instead of tormenting me with their fucked up riddles
@lolennui have you had any 1042-S income while your grandfather was on a railroad pension?

@lolennui @JimmySwizzle

Are you?
Single = 1
Single but looking = 2
Single but have given up = 3
(see section 10A to declare cats as dependents)
Married = 4
Married but on Ashley Madison = 5
Married with an unusually large life insurance policy = 6
Widowed = 7
Widowed but secretly, has someone you don’t introduce to family = 8

@lolennui no kidding. They recently contacted me about not paying taxes for 3 years. So I showed them the cashed checks and asked for my money back. Then they just disappeared. WTF!
@lolennui @tvaziri The IRS has all the information it needs to fill out our taxes for us, for the vast majority of Americans who only have a W-2. Intuit and Republicans prevent Congress from allowing it. https://www.propublica.org/article/inside-turbotax-20-year-fight-to-stop-americans-from-filing-their-taxes-for-free
Inside TurboTax’s 20-Year Fight to Stop Americans From Filing Their Taxes for Free

Using lobbying, the revolving door and “dark pattern” customer tricks, Intuit fended off the government’s attempts to make tax filing free and easy, and created its multi-billion-dollar franchise.

@ejkalafarski @lolennui @tvaziri while I know companies do pay to keep things the way they are, I can't help but think that forcing people to know how to calculate their own taxes is probably a good thing. Think about how quickly we all click on "I accept" on terms we never read when downloading an app. Each person being responsible for their taxes independent of the government means the government has to be transparent and we are the double check for their work. If people stopped having to do it, I bet it would get non transparent fast. Would be nice if the calculations were a bit less complex though for sure.
@HonestlyMom @lolennui @tvaziri Yeah, that's a valid and well-said concern. Convenience comes with a tradeoff in nuance. I'd hope for a system where "pre-filled" is an option for the simplest filers, and anyone can opt into doing their own taxes themselves.
@lolennui did u acquire (or divest) any tortoises during the year 2023, or were you in near proximity to any shelled animals
@lolennui If they made it that simple then the billionaires couldn't game the system and starve the country's coffers.
@lolennui IRS: You owe us money- but you get to tell us how much. If you guess wrong you are in big trouble.
@alysondecker @lolennui I would even let them keep the money they owe me if they promised to go get the money other people owe them.

@lolennui IRS: Good news! We have done a massive upgrade of our online tax software. With the power of Artificial Intelligence, we are now able to determine the amount of tax you owe us.

The AI Agent will now ask you a series of simple questions.
