Please respond with your point of view about the police using #DNA databases like #GEDmatch to solve cold cases. Let's assume we all value privacy, we all value crime resolution. But which do you value most when DNA you submitted to a database for genealogical research before police recognized this data source might be used now to find a criminal?

@dcoxbaker In theory, I don't see why not. In practice, police in more than one country have a history of abuse of or over reliance on tools they don't understand the limitations of. Not to mention the odds of finding one more way to find a demographic against which police can discriminate. No more new toys without reform.
@Space_Burger_Steve It has got me recognizing that I think very differently about personal privacy and information privacy. Yes, I want walls around me at home, in a public restroom or dressing room, etc. But I don't know that I ever really believed my data was private. I came along after J Edgar Hoover. I have a hard time mustering outrage, but I wonder if I should be.
@dcoxbaker From a more abstract perspective, one take that I liked was that advanced levels of surveillance are acceptable if and only if the government has full transparency and accountability.
