Not got any ID? The tories have deliberately made it more difficult for you to vote because they know you're probably not voting for them. They're counting on you not bothering to click on this link to get yourself some free ID.

Apply for photo ID to vote (called a ‘Voter Authority Certificate’)

Apply for photo ID to vote (Voter Authority Certificate) in some elections and referendums in Great Britain if you do not have an accepted form of ID.

@AngharadHafod
The same is true in many US states, with same flimsy justifications. It's taken volunteer groups to push free voter ID awareness.
@AngharadHafod i was SOOOOO disappointed that this is just an A4 sheet of paper.
I really desperately need some kind of photo ID card!!!

@AngharadHafod I will bd turning up at the Polling Station purely to register that I'm not going to produce ID, and uf ghat means I can't vote, so be it. Hopefully the Electoral Commission or suchlike will be gathering feedback on how many people are turned away. (There's no chance of affecting the local result.)

If its not abandoned by then, I'll probably pinch my nose and produce at the GE, though.

@BibbleCo that's probably not a bad tactic for local elections.

Come the GE though (like you imply) kicking the tories out is the most important thing.

@AngharadHafod Concur. Very slim chance of ditching the local MP, but important to add one to the "not the Tory" count, I think.
@BibbleCo
Unfortunately, low turnout won't convince the Tories this is a bad idea: in the trials, turnout dropped into the 20% region and they called them "successful"!
@AngharadHafod

@BibbleCo @AngharadHafod

We need to absolutely destroy the Tories in the Local elections as well. By turning up without a card, you're just making life hard for the volunteer council staff doing their best to take the votes.

#GTTO at all levels of government. Don't rely on other people doing that for you.

@jbond @AngharadHafod I'm not - it would be a cold day in hell when my council ward returns a non-Tory.

Of course I'll be polite and respectful to the poll workers - apart from any other considerations, it's a small village :)

@AngharadHafod Whoa. So the UK is following the US with the voter ID nonsense. Sad to see.
@AngharadHafod
Thanks for the reminder. Turns out my expired passport will do. Yay!

@AngharadHafod

If I was still in the habit of canvassing door to door, I would be offering to help people with getting the necessary document. There doesn't appear to be a form available to take round (could be wrong about that) but a good tablet or laptop connected to that internet thingy would make it possible to do online applications for those with no internet, I hope.

@AngharadHafod I’m 100% not a Tory, but have a different view on this. I suspect they have launched these changes to try and drive away voters who don’t vote for them.

But when I moved to NI, I found out that voter ID is mandatory. The turnout rates in NI are pretty similar to everywhere else in the UK. Obviously we don’t know who is voting, but top line figures are comparable.

@AngharadHafod in 2019, they're were just 33 cases of voter fraud. As there were 58m votes, this works out as 0.000057%.

We all know why they're doing this, they're trying everything to stay in power. It's disgusting! Want further proof? A young person's railcard isn't a valid photo ID but an OAPs card is! Come on! FFS!

@UKFilmNerd @AngharadHafod are CitizenCard still offering a discount code to zero the initial cost?

Remember when the government issued a plastic NI card at 16, 'cos they wanted to tax you? Perhaps all GCSE candidates should have mandatory voter approved ID provided as a reward for their labours?

@AngharadHafod
Worse - types of id biased towards older (allegedly* more likely to vote tory) people - eg, bus pass etc. But, students' university passes etc not accepted???

*Allegedly as recent research seems to suggest this isn't happening as much as it used to (citation needed)

@Henrysbridge @AngharadHafod

another potential knock on effect is that as many young people use a driving licence (provisional or full) as an ID document, obtaining one may further encourage car culture/dependency, and young people to vote against councillors who introduce further speed limits/low traffic neighbourhoods..

@AngharadHafod

My expired passport is valid as i.d. till about December 2023 / January 2024.

(There's also at least one fake [but Government-made one] out there in the wild (the cop-bastards have been doing fraud with my identity).)

@AngharadHafod It’s annoying that they’re not making it clear to people (at least in the adverts I’ve seen) that you can also get a postal vote, which you don’t need photo ID for.
@AngharadHafod I see the British conservatives are taking a page out of the American playbook to disenfranchise people

@AngharadHafod THIS is why I am addicted to Mastodon for politics. The republican fascists in America have given the playbook to fascists in the UK. The similarities in the strategy to destroy democracy are obvious.

@AngharadHafod is people not voting as big a problem in the UK as it is in the US?
@crysophylax yes. And voter suppression is also an issue; it's a tactic of the right-wing which has been observed in recent elections. So, for example, targeting younger voters with social media ads which make them feel there's no point in voting.

@AngharadHafod Specifically the implication that you'll be turned away at the polling station without one if you've changed your name lately and/or if you don't look like old pictures of yourself any more.

Hmmm, can't help but do A Big Think about that

@DotMaetrix that's a very good point. Not too many trans people would vote tory I guess (though Labour have hardly been great in the topic either of late).

Postal vote is probably the way to go in such cases where photos might not match.

@AngharadHafod

Passport ID system?
- The UK Brexit Government does more control. 😔

@AngharadHafod Though it's useful to post such a site link up on here, I think leafletting student areas, or other sections of your local community would be more widely helpful.
@AngharadHafod Do you know of any campaigning body who are taking this up? It needs spread far and wide.
@alanfleming I don't, I suspect it's going to be down to individual parties. It would be good if some organisation would take this on though; perhaps MakeVotesMatter?
@AngharadHafod this message needs to be heard as far and wide as possible. I overheard a conversation in the council I work in this week that those working on the frontline of the elections are very worried indeed. They don’t want to have to turn voters away and they really fear the response they will get from those who have no idea photo ID is the new reality. It could get nasty.
@AngharadHafod It will be a shock to many Election Officals in a UK Parliament election, that the Photo ID shown is an Irish Passport. I wonder will they, (wrongly) try and block the individual from voting?
@AngharadHafod Also there’s the option to apply for a permanent postal vote. (Haven’t checked all the replies, sorry if that’s a duplicate response.)
@AngharadHafod
I wonder why the BBC and the UK tabloid press are not headlining this information? Surely they cannot be aiding and abetting voter suppression? I wonder why they'd do that? We desperately need an independent press. CNN and French stations give a much clearer view of UK current affairs, than our own Tory controlled media.
@AngharadHafod It is apparent the oligarch-bought Tories are just like our oligarch-bought Republican Party. @GOP

@AngharadHafod

Crap law BUT many many items of photo ID will do. You don't have to get the Voter Authority Certificate (??!!) if you have passport driving licence or a whole range of existing stuff listed here

https://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/i-am-a/voter/voter-id

Voter ID

Find out about the new requirement to take photo ID to some elections in England, Scotland and Wales

@stephenwhq that's right. But a lot of people won't have those things. Such people are disproportionately not tory voters.
@AngharadHafod Yes, that's why I'm making the fuss (as well as, on principle). I'm worried people will not go to the polls because they didn't get something they didn't need to get. In the US especially making voting seem a drag is part of the point.
@AngharadHafod (I just posted the full list of suitable ID on every platform I'm on - but of course you may not have seen that. I think it is transparent voter suppression.

@AngharadHafod

If your requesting a postal vote end the request straight back to your local elections team.

Not any address belonging to the Tory party (or any other party).
