Twitter just announced free access to the Twitter API will end on February 9, with unannounced pricing or usage details, effectively killing every free fun and useful thing ever built with it: bots, games, mashups, visualizations, research projects, autoposters, autoblockers, deleters, and so much more. https://twitter.com/twitterdev/status/1621026986784337922

“Starting February 9, we will no longer support free access to the Twitter API, both v2 and v1.1. A paid basic tier will be available instead 🧵”

I guess that means the end of my own Belong.io link aggregator, which I’ve run for nearly ten years. https://belong.io/
BELONG

@andybaio could you repoint it at Mastodon?
@marcprecipice maybe, but it doesn’t really fit well with the culture of mastodon

@andybaio yeah, that’s a good point.

Thank you for making it. I’ve visited it most days that it’s been live. I really enjoyed it.

@marcprecipice @andybaio FWIW I think accounts like this are in line with Mastodon thinking, I’d just host it on a bot server.
@jeffgreco @marcprecipice @andybaio Yeah I think a single-serving Mastodon Glitch server or similar would be perfect for a lil bot
@jeffgreco @marcprecipice @andybaio Looks like somebody's made an all-bot server already
https://botsin.space/about
botsin.space

A Mastodon instance for bots and bot allies.

Mastodon hosted on botsin.space
@andybaio @marcprecipice but who says the culture of Mastodon is static? This place is going to become whatever people want it to be. Now is the time to bring over the good stuff that's being jettisoned from Twitter.
@andybaio RIP; I still visit it daily. Will you be porting it to the fediverse?
@jmason don’t think so, it doesn’t work well with Mastodon’s opt-in culture
@andybaio oh! Thank you for all the nice links it surfaced all these years :-)
@andybaio i discovered a lot of cool things through that so thanks for running it all this time
@andybaio sorry to hear that, it must sting. Wish people could be better people, but alas billionaires don’t count among them. They turn into a monstrous swamp thing always looking to squeeze *more* than they or anyone else will ever need out of anything. Build in the fediverse, please. It’s the future!!
@andybaio one of my favorite sites, one I visited daily since its inception. Thank you for the brilliance! 🙏
@andybaio Aw man, I still check that daily out of habit 😞
@andybaio So sad, belong.io has been a daily visit for years and years.
@andybaio it looks like a lot of people are moving to the front-end unofficial api that's used to power the website, if that's of any interest to you.
@andybaio Jesus. I honestly didn’t think they’d do this.
@misty @andybaio And even now they have - ONE WEEKS NOTICE?!? Really?
@talios @misty @andybaio
That's plenty more notice than what Twitterrific and Tweetbot were given
I’m delighted to hear this. Anything that worsens Twitter’s reputation for those outside tech gossip circles means potentially less traction for Musk’s white supremacy engine.
@datn @andybaio Elon is determined to kill the golden goose he bought and who should stop him really?
The rest of us can move to another social media platform that he cant buy
@Lazarou @andybaio i hope he does kill it. it’s been ruined. the core users have moved on. it’s a platform for hate now. let it die.
@andybaio It's all part of Elon's master plan to make Twitter less and less relevant, until all the users leave, and with their newfound free time, become much more productive, make more money, and buy more Teslas.
#supergenius
@brouhaha @andybaio Some have suggested it’s all part of Elon’s master plan to devalue Twitter to the point that his investors panic and let him buy back the debt for pennies on the dollar.

@jsavin @brouhaha @andybaio

Is that even lawful?

@Wolf_Baginski No idea, but seems like it would be something the owners of his debt would want to look into.
@jsavin @brouhaha @andybaio seems much more likely that they will just seize control of the company than try to renegotiate the debt.
@zenkat @jsavin @brouhaha @andybaio They can’t. Musk has majority ownership.
@dev_tty01 @zenkat @jsavin @brouhaha @andybaio As long as Twitter/Musk keep making the debt payments…
@zenkat I doubt it actually. I think his investors are probably self-aware enough to realize they would have no chance of regaining any value by doing that.
@andybaio Very sad to hear this. Not because it wasn’t predictable, but more because it wasn’t all bad and I made many friends on Twitter since I have joined in 2007. It was easy to stay in touch during and after events and it was a good tool for @btconf in Twitter‘s good days. For me it was hard to let go, but with apps like @ivory it feels better and better on Mastodon, I have to say. It was good before, but it makes it really easier for others also to switch.

@andybaio Curious if this will affect #Movetodon..

@Tibor can you comment on this?

@Alex0007 @andybaio can't exactly say what Twitter is planning, but if they would shut down the free API completely, that would definitely break my tool
@andybaio wild isn’t it? No idea how they even plan on charging - does the end user pay or the service? Anyway, I read a thread on there last week that was _so bad_ I tried to shut down all my bots. But I couldn’t work out how. At least this will force my hand!
@andybaio it’s almost as if it was owned by someone who had no clue about how to attract users to the value the platform (used to) give
@julian @andybaio Musk seems to have enlisted the Underware Gnomes as his business development team.
@andybaio do they even have an anti-scraping team anymore? Scraping is a thing. Not rate-limited and free.

@andybaio damn. i'd been holding off on deleting my old tweets but i guess now is the time...

sorry about your app! (gonna start selling cards saying that)

@natashareynolds any suggested methods?
@irfan there's semiphemeral (https://semiphemeral.com/) that i was looking at but haven't tried out yet... i'm sure there are many others
Semiphemeral

Automatically delete your data from tech platforms, except for what you want to keep

Semiphemeral
@andybaio they really are determined to destroy twitter. Soon they’ll charge for the ability to like a tweet
@andybaio Also killing migration tools! So tell folks who haven't done so yet to run fedifinder/etc before it's too late.
@andybaio I wonder what this means for services that (exclusively) allow to sign in with Twitter
@nilsding I’ve been wondering the same thing
@andybaio I genuinely wonder if Twitter have anyone left in a decision influencing capacity who's thought about that question before they made this announcement
@simon @andybaio I’ve never watched someone fly a plane into the side of a mountain in real-time until now.
@andybaio @simon considering it seemed they turned off the MFA or at least broke it/ descaled it / the service so users couldn’t login, and this broke their DAU’s, I doubt there is any influence on the personification of a Meme stock
@simon @andybaio If you want to check which apps you've connected, check: https://twitter.com/settings/connected_apps

@nilsding @andybaio If nothing else, it means I’d be very wary about offering it as an option these days. It might vanish without warning, or go pay-wall.
@andybaio Subscribing to loads of artbots was a deliberate detoxification-by-dilution strategy for me. Looks like full toxic firehose going forward, save for the cat picture accounts.
@PlentyNuff @andybaio Same, the “hourly$animal” accounts are a joy.
@andybaio So I guess I will have to move my little bots to Mastodon then.
@andybaio this is the end of an era in social media 😞
@andybaio I want to believe they did this due to the #MastodonMigration tools.
