Masks work, but aren't magic. They can't instantly end the pandemic alone. Anti-maskers exploit this nuance to trick people into not wearing them.

But you make a difference in every space you wear a mask, by making that space more accessible to higher risk people. That's huge!

We can end the pandemic by investing in infrastructure to clean indoor air and developing vaccines that are more effective at reducing #COVID spread. In the meantime, masks are one of the most effective tools we have to make society accessible to everyone. Use them!
@luckytran Thank you for reminding me. I "forget" when I go out to use my mask. I've sunken right back into pre-pandemic thinking. I need to stop that. Covid is a horrific disease, IMO. It leaves people broken.
@luckytran Hot take. I think the important bit is not developing infrastructure, but mandating safe minimum air quality levels.
@luckytran it really doesnt seem like the pandemic can be ended. Thats not an argument against masking, by the way

@luckytran

When the pandemic hit I thought Musk would see another chance to gather a group of smart people and have them innovate the shit out of Covid protection, treatment and workplace environment like they did with SpaceX and Tesla... but of course, it just showed musk was an idiot and he started spouting conspiracy theories and bullsh!t showing us who he really was.

@luckytran relying on “personal responsibility” isn’t really a rational public health policy and it’s pretty well doomed to fail, though it does seem like it absorbs a lot of energy that could be directed at actually creating effective public health policy by holding the government accountable

@luckytran Nice.

People who wear seat belts still perish in vehicle collisions. Those who wear condoms yet impregnate. Tooth-brushing people sometimes still get dental cavities. Pedestrians wearing bright clothing still get mowed down by careless motorists. Yet we - even anti-maskers and other horrible people - still take measures to reduce risk.

Attorney who fought Florida helmet laws died in motorcycle crash while not wearing one

Ron Smith, 66, and his girlfriend, 62-year-old Brenda Jeanan Volpe, were on their way to a funeral with a group of riders from the American Legion.

@rose @luckytran People get bitten by mosquitoes while sleeping in their homes, but they still invest in screens for their windows. 😉

@luckytran

If only we had an erudite population that valued such things.

@luckytran

And higher risk people are about a third of the population

@luckytran With proper fitting and consistent use, they're pretty damn near magic.

@luckytran

The problem is that masks have been sold to the public as the magic solution that can end the pandemic. This was a huge mistake. Overselling and underdelivering is one of the reasons why the public lost faith.

@luckytran I agree with you 100%! As a cancer patient I have to always be vigilant about infection prevention/control.
@luckytran as someone who lives with someone at high risk, we still wear masks, period.
@luckytran The more people wear #masks in indoor public areas, the more the Reff declines. #COVID19 https://blotreport.com/2023/01/26/its-not-over/
@luckytran @ke7zum Lol but good fore keeping yr face warm in winter.
