Utah didn’t ban youth hormone therapy such as testosterone boosters for cis boys. It didn’t ban “gender affirming surgery” such as breast augmentation for cis girls.

Just for trans kids.

You know, in case you’re wondering if lawmakers are really out to “protect the children” like they claim.

Give me a break.

@georgetakei thanks for highlighting the struggles we face as trans people. ❤️

@georgetakei I am so disappointed in the governor for this. He has previously surprised me by trying to protect trans kids, and trying to reduce suicide rates but now it feels like he has given up.

They accuse us parents of "grooming" when we listen to our children and try to provide the help and care that they need, but when a parent tells their child they are evil and a sinner because of who and what they are, that's accepted.

@minego @georgetakei that election is looming for limp cox. he needs to toe the line. 😎

@Pat @georgetakei This is Utah. Being realistic, he did this because that election is coming.

He did this because the voters would rather attend funerals for their children than to let those children live as their true selves.

@georgetakei

Gee, both of those things could, in some circumstances, be considered grooming.

@georgetakei Ashamed of my state today.

@georgetakei

Politicians practicing medicine without a license. They should all be charged.

@georgetakei it's sickening how many states are codifying child abuse "to protect the children." 🤢
@solient @georgetakei
Ever has it been. The worst abuses by Church, State and Person have always been with a flimsy veneer of protection, be it in service to tradition or a hackneyed 'morality' which equates to nothing more or less than 'it's what I want', and child abuse is no exception at all. Only now are they learning just how sheer can they make that covering, a translucent sheet of plastic wrap which still nobody dares to poke a hole through.

@theogrin @solient @georgetakei

These anti-trans laws also establish legal precedents that can act as a foundation for attacks on other civil rights.

Privacy. Agency. Autonomy. The right to raise your own children. Other unenumerated rights.

Losing civil rights to agency & autonomy can be used to legally recreate slavery.

When do attacks on reproductive rights become forced childbirth for example? It's already removing the right to travel for women in some states.

@georgetakei I am not aware of all things related. But as a plastic surgeon here in Brazil, I think breast implants are not fda approved for young girls. I think it is a 21 years or older approval. And I think it makes sense to ban breast implants for at least 16 year old girls.

Not sure about the other things, but I also don't think you get public funding for breast implants in young girls.

As I said, I am just talking about the breast augmentation part of all of this, not the rest

@stocchero @georgetakei

I'm not aware of age restriction laws on breast augmentation in US for cis girls, though the US FDA approval is for 18+ for saline implants, so 18 yr olds who can't drink alcohol or buy cigarettes can get breast implants. They can also sign up for military service.

Plastic Surgeon Charged with Manslaughter for Teen's Death After Botched Breast Augmentation

Police have arrested the Colorado plastic surgeon and nurse anesthetist who were involved in the botched breast augmentation that led to the death of teen patient Emmalyn Nguyen

@Rhyothemis @georgetakei
Yes, sorry, I forgot the saline implants are 18y. We don't use them here in Brazil, and forgot about them.

@georgetakei because they don’t believe trans people are real.

They haven’t banned circumcising of babies either.

They don’t care that they high five their 9 year old boys for “hitting on” a waitress or female nurse. They refuse to label a female child’s chest as “not a sex organ” which could then be treated just like boys who go topless everywhere.

They sexualize and groom children all the time.

@georgetakei Ugh, I really hate my state sometimes.

@georgetakei

The people voting for this probably never realized that they're voting in favor of slavery.

The overturn of Roe vs Wade is a disguise to return women to a condition of chattel slavery.

This time with the state determining agency & autonomy instead of a male relative or spouse. The Saudis would be proud of this version of sharia law.

"Parental rights" disguises laws recreating slavery. Children as slaves to their parent's bigotry.

Criminalizing trans care is no different.

@georgetakei somewhere in there is equal protection under the law.

@georgetakei Coming from a state whose overwhelmingly dominant religion (including among its legislators) regularly spawns colonies of barely-adolescent girls being systemically sexually abused and treated as a blend of solace and cattle, and which champions anti-gay law and suicide-inducing ritual shunning.

Yep. In character. At least they’re consistent..

@georgetakei The also allow religious denial of medical care for children, faith healing, and anti-vax nonsense IIRC.

You can wave a chicken foot over the ravaged body of a child you sent to a covid party and that's fine, but peer reviewed psychology bad.

Oh and circumcision is fine too. Who cares what the kid wants. Cut him up.

@georgetakei yep. Fucking horrible isn't it. And we're not done yet, on either side of the Atlantic. It'll get worse before it gets better.
@georgetakei also not banned: child-marriage. a 16-year-old can legally marry with a parent's written consent in Utah
@georgetakei it’s so obvious you’d think people would be rubbing their cheeks from getting slapped in face by it so much.
@georgetakei And not even mentioning that women can have low testosterone, too, and also need to have it increased medically, without getting anywhere close to "transitioning". "Let's deny women medical treatment just in case some trans kid might get ideas."
@georgetakei Also the entire "small government, keep your laws out of my business" bullshit
@georgetakei PLus, if they really cared about kids, they would want more regulations on pollutants that cause things like birth defects and health problems for children.

@georgetakei gender affirming procedures, pero no mucho.

Talk about freedom.

@georgetakei Fun fact! These Republicans are also the ones caught in sex scandals and legislate for child marriage.
@georgetakei All these bills allow coercive assignment on intersex kids, by the way. Every single one of them. It's legal if the parents want it and the child _doesn't_.

@georgetakei I really wish conservatives would just be honest about how they feel. If they just admit they don't like trans people, then we can have a productive conversation about it.

Everyone feels uncomfortable with ideas and things they are not familiar with. The best solution is to familiarize themselves with it, though.

@georgetakei To be fair, breast augmentation for girls or testosterone for cis boys don't have the potential side effects like the use of _cross_-sex hormones. https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/gender-dysphoria/in-depth/pubertal-blockers/art-20459075 Mayo Clinic:

"might also have long-term effects on:
Growth spurts
Bone growth and density
Future fertility — depending on when pubertal blockers are started"

Those are permanent consequences. Facing facts allows informed choices, which is what enables people, also kids!, to live the lives they want.

Mayo Clinic
@quixote @georgetakei there are many reasons to oppose this care that sound reasonable when they aren’t examined, but it is literally life saving in some cases, and has positive outcomes in many more.
@janellabean @georgetakei It's a misunderstanding if you see that as opposition. I'm not opposed. I'm so far from opposed that I don't even see lifesaving as a necessary justification. In my world, you get to live how you want to. You don't need to justify it. But you do need all the facts, including the ones about potential problems, to make the choice you actually do want.
@georgetakei
Personally, I think any hormone therapy should not be acceptable for any child.
@PJLavatai @georgetakei You are clearly not a doctor.
@Benjamin_Snow @georgetakei
Hormone therapy not necessary for a medical issue.
@PJLavatai @georgetakei Yes, you are definitely not a doctor, just an ideologue with moronic opinions. Look up kleinfelter's syndrome for a start.
@Benjamin_Snow @georgetakei
Those sound like actual medical necessities, not vanity purposes.
Pretty sure that is what I said.
@PJLavatai @georgetakei And yet people like you are putting access to all hormone therapies in jeopardy. Also, your bigotry against trans people doesn't stop gender dysphoria from being a medical issue.
@georgetakei
That, of course is my opinion. I believe that breast enhancement and the like are best left until a person is an adult.
@georgetakei Well, sadly, they don't really care about any "kids," this is just a part of their ploy to attack anyone or anything that doesn't conform to their beliefs. Sometimes, I wonder why their "God" is much different from the loving God of the Bible.
@georgetakei bash back bigotry. They about to find out…

@georgetakei

I just don't understand the cruelty.

@georgetakei But subsidized viagra for the pale old rich guys!
@georgetakei if it serves the interests of the patriarchy in Utah, it’s still all good
@georgetakei They're clearly not helping anyone at all except the wealthiest Americans.
@georgetakei In general, rather than Utah specifically, I see two issues here. Are hormone supplements necessary in transgender and, if so, should you wait until puberty is complete before deciding it needs supplementation?
I do think that you make a good point about breast surgery under 18. I am not sure that is allowed in most countries because puberty is incomplete and because it is thought that the individual would be too young to take such an important decision.
@georgetakei Very good analysis of the fiasco on #trans in #utah here. @jaykuo Worth reading for sure:
https://statuskuo.substack.com/p/they-say-theyre-protecting-the-children
They Say They’re Protecting the Children. It’s a Damn Lie.

On Saturday, Governor Spencer Cox of Utah signed a complete ban on hormone replacement therapy and gender affirming surgery for transgender youth in the state. The bill targets the most vulnerable kids in our country, who face the highest rates of suicide of any group, but to hear him say it, he’s really doing it to protect kids. Yet he had to lie outright to try and make that point.

The Status Kuo
@georgetakei Utah is a messed up place!
@georgetakei ~I watched the 3rd episode of The Last of Us (darn good show by the way) and it has gay men having sex. I then made the mistake of reading the comment section of the video service I use. Such hate, such violent, homophobic rage. I despair.
@georgetakei “Protect” them from everything but suicide, it seems.
