We’ve been asked, countless times: “Are you folks working on a Mastodon app?”

The answer isn’t a simple one.

Masto-do or Masto-don’t? • The Breakroom

Let’s just say that January 12th was expected, yet still surprising. We knew the cutting and slashing at Twitter would affect us at some point, but how we’d get eviscerated was an unknown. Many other people saw it was coming as reality began to sink in at the end of October. We’ve been asked, countless […]

@Iconfactory Masto-do. Fill the gap, and bring accessibility. And open API guys, what a temptation!! There’s a bunch of good ideas in the air and other already live, don’t be late to the party 😜
@Iconfactory Not a simple question, but thank you for the solid answer.
@Iconfactory I would ❤️ to see a superlative PixelFed app made 😊🤞

@Iconfactory

So possibly something like Fedilab but for iOS ...

@Iconfactory it’s great that some of the Twitter third parties are going on Mastodon early on so there’s going to be quality Mastodon apps, and already are even though they’re still fresh, while some like you are looking at the bigger picture. That’s smart !
@Iconfactory If y'all do ever make a client: Mastoriffic might be a good name :) I'm just glad y'all are here.
@Iconfactory I really hope you do a Mastodon app. Loved your Twitter app but I'm no longer on Twitter.
@Iconfactory “However, the Fediverse is bigger than Mastodon” - I’m really interested in what an app that is able to interact with many different ActivityPub services would look like.
I hope you (or somebody) is able to explore that space and it becomes fruitful.
@jdbartee @Iconfactory @tchambers I would like to note (just in case you haven't come across it yet) that @pixelfed posts render indistinguishably inline on Mastodon. the first time I came across one and realized what I was looking at, I def had a moment. (I'm sure we all remember the drama between Instagram and Twitter just over *preview cards* being rendered inline lmao.)

@jdbartee @Iconfactory .. Yes the #fediverse is much larger. I’m hoping that new technology will allow me to do a simple search that includes ALL fediverse servers that are “in good standing”. The current “search” mechanism is so primitive & convoluted I don’t even try anymore. We’re all missing so much connectivity by being hindered (by the current technology) like this.

#WeAreAllConnected

@Iconfactory @jsnell @chockenberry This sounds really interesting Craig. Can’t wait to see where you end up.
@Iconfactory Good answer! As others are filling in the gap by being early, you can come later, but from a different angle. 🙂
Would be cool if you made something that's Activitypub first (and thus also Mastodon), instead of "just" an app that's Mastodon first.

@Iconfactory I think it would be awesome for something new. Like, an ActivityPub server that you can run yourself that's lightweight and works with other apps? WorldWideWeb for ActivityPub or something?

I feel like there's a lot of potential, and clients are pretty great right now. Not saying you wouldn't build something great -- you would -- but y'all are heckin talented and it would be a shame if more creative ideas lose to a client app.

@Iconfactory I had a few name ideas in this thread: https://sfba.social/@townsend/109689716909809060
Jason Townsend (@[email protected])

If #IconFactory were to make a Mastodon client inspired by #Twitterrific, what should it be called? Boosts appreciated. See thread for four more choices. [ ] Mastodacious [ ] Mastodonderful [ ] Mastoriffic [ ] Mastodondrous

@Iconfactory Tooterriffic?? 🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️
@Iconfactory You’ll be sorely missed in that space but we’re excited for what your future holds!
@Iconfactory I was wondering this just the other day, when ivory dropped, if ya’ll were going to throw your hat in the ring
@Iconfactory If you do decide, I'll be here waiting. Also would love to see a non Apple Arcade version of the new Frenzic (but I imagine that's also not so simple 😄)
@Iconfactory #Mastodon is great but there are a plethora of other services out there.
@darnell I might be wrong but I think what @Iconfactory meant is that an app, as in a phone/computer program, that is capable of running multiple platforms rather than just mastodon. Like, an app built to use mastodon, misskey and other services all in one place.

@raccoon @Iconfactory There is an app called #SocialHub which is able to connect to #Mastodon, #Misskey, #Pixelfed & #Pleroma.

SocialHub can also connect to #Twitter, #Tumblr & #Slack as well.

👉🏾 https://apps.apple.com/us/app/socialhub-socialmedia-client/id1474451582

However by being accessible to these distinct social networks, it ends up sacrificing the potential in all of them, which is why I suggest specific, specialized apps instead.

‎SocialHub - SocialMedia Client

‎Are you spending too much time on social media? SocialHub is best solution for you ! SocialHub is the multi social media (such as Mastodon) client application , and SocialHub performs a stretch of plural social media accounts and can post it on at the same time. and you can make account groups to…

App Store
@darnell @Iconfactory What's the benefit of using a dedicated app for a service over using the original website of the instance one person is registered to?
I personally tend to use my browser for everything I can because the more apps I install, the more exploitable things I have on my device, or so I imagine. I play around with some at times but always end up uninstalling them after a few days.
@[email protected] @darnell @Iconfactory Apps are very useful if you operate in an area with sporadic signal or if the signal cuts off while uploading media.

From my experience the browser crashes, resulting in data loss (pictures, videos, audio, word documents, etcetera). The app simply waits until signal is restored (sometimes minutes or hours later depending on your location) & sends the info again when it connects.

Very useful.

That’s why most people usually demand an app instead of just relying on the browser. Sites without an app will gain little attention from the public.
@Iconfactory
Maybe if you're interested in the wider #fediverse, you could write an iPhone equivalent to #Fedilab (that is, supporting #Pleroma, #Pixelfed, #Peertube etc as well as #Mastodon)?
@Iconfactory @jsnell I’d been using Tweetbot for years and loved it. Following Jason’s recommendation on MacBreak Weekly, I’ve subscribed to the premium edition of Ivory as I venture into Mastodon. Still not sure how to find everything I’d like to follow, but I’m trying.
@Iconfactory Thanks for the thoughtful answer and approach. I’ll always miss Ollie, but the wallpaper is a fine substitute for now. Please know that my experience of the bird site was so entirely different from others because of Twitteriffic. And so much better (for me). Considered, user-first UX is a gift you give to the world, thanks.
@smatheson Thanks so much for that, Scott. We appreciate it more than you know. 🖖
@Iconfactory as a twitterrific subscriber wanted to ask same, so waiting for any news :) maybe universal fediverse client? :D
@yatil Das finde ich spannend, dass sie nicht auf #Mastodon sondern auf #ActivityPub. Da bin ich gespannt.
@Iconfactory Just dreaming - if someone would bring all fediverse services into one client app, that would almost be a Facebook alternative… just need to solve the server side ;)
@Iconfactory so…. You have no interest on developing a Mastodon client. Ok. It’s not mandatory. I’m kind of disappointed but it’s just because I’m a switcher and I’m beginning to love Mastodon to the point of quitting Twitter for ever. I was a Twitterrific and Tweetbot user one on my phone and the other in the iPad for different needs. I still love all your apps, so I know you really don’t need Twitter to survive. Blessings! I’ll be here waiting for Masterrific!
@Iconfactory this is so valid and thanks for the transparency. Even if you’re a late comer … I’d still be very interested to see what y’all would do.
@Iconfactory You mentioned you like to be first/early (you "got" the #birdsite and were out in front often) - can you a elaborate a little more on what about the #fediverse made it more challenging to be early?
@nontechietalk It’s really just that we do not have time right now to work on such an app with our resources devoted to Frenzic and other apps like Linea.
@Iconfactory Fair enough, and thanks for speaking to this. We'll look forward to what y'all have cooking!
@Iconfactory This gave me a twinkle in my eye at the thought of @Iconfactory designing a *fediverse first* client app! Opened up Sketch and start plotting out how a client could look if it had first class support for things like @bookwyrm and @peertube...
