Which, if any, JRPG do you think has eclipsed Chrono Trigger?
Genuinely curious and not trying to be a jerk!

@vontheodore I think "eclipse" is such a strong word, it would have to be a game that made CT completely irrelevant – and that game definitely does not exist.

I do think other JRPGs have accomplished their visions in equally successful ways (Persona, Grandia, FF), but the visions are distinct.

Edit: intentionally not adding numbers behind Persona and FF, pick your favorite. I do mean Grandia 1 though.

@vontheodore oddly don't think in terms of masterpieces/eclipsing or whatnot. Oddly I've never finished CT! (I had the PS1 experience growing up, but saw later bits at friends) Ones I gravitate to are Lufia 2 (very cool field map interactions and puzzle dungeons, great game flow and presentation), FFMQ (similar, "very easy" but also very accessible), SaGa Frontier (neat tech/spell systems, big parties, branching scenarios, flawed but cool)
@vontheodore I guess anything with non-linear character progression like Final Fantasy Legend 2, FF2J. Many of them maybe "miss the mark" but are still enjoyable for their novelty. Chrono Cross (which I like to think of more as Radical Dreamers expanded than Chrono Trigger sequel) tries a lot of super neat ideas for an RPG and I liked that you could run from any battle and regear, a nifty spell system, they way the level your whole party at boss fights, amazing soundtrack
@vontheodore Also anything Tri-Ace which is a usually a mashup of very neat hybrid action core mechanics, character recruitment and interaction systems, and then a bunch of frankly-convoluted-but-cool crafting/skill system stuff that lets you really open up the game to do more (also lets you have fun breaking the systems and pushing those to the limit if you really want to grind). Anyways, I'll leave it at that, but thought I'd share a few ^^
@eggboycolor I love Lufia 2! I need to keep going with SaGa Frontier, I got the remaster a while back ☺️

@vontheodore I think a better question is, what RPGs are on par with CT. There are several I like more (way more in some cases), but it's a matter of taste. Here's my list:

Phantasy Star I, II, IV
Breath of Fire II
Final Fantasy 6 & 7
Suikoden I & II
Shadow Hearts
Alundra
Dragon Quest 4-8
Diablo 1 & 2
Star Ocean 2
etc etc

@vontheodore Mystic Quest
@vontheodore you know, I'm joking but mystic quests music is great
@vontheodore Maybe a fictional alternate dimension version of Xenogears if they'd have been able to finish it
@Shoehead Mystic Quest was my first Final Fantasy πŸ˜…
@vontheodore imho: Xenoblade Chronicles and Xenoblade 3
@vontheodore I don't see the deal with Chrono Trigger. Oftentimes it'll be praised as a "JRPG without all the bullshit" or similar. I don't think the bullshit of JRPGs is bullshit. It irks me that a game that seems to be praised for not doing what is part of the genre, is lauded as the best of the genre.
@takunomi I'm curious now, what do you consider the bullshit? Is it the way that the enemies are visible / no random battles in CT?

@vontheodore hmm. I don't want to take anyone's love of CT away from them. At the same time, the discourse of what makes a game good becomes muddy to me when a game I experience as fairly banal is always at the top of everyone's Top 20 Games.

The simple version is: idunno, story and characters aren't doing it for me. I don't have a problem with random encounters. JRPGs only require grinding if you're thick. A game can be 2 hours or 90 hours. Doesn't make either one bad.

@vontheodore man, just ignore me. I'm sure CT is fine.
