Which, if any, JRPG do you think has eclipsed Chrono Trigger?
@vontheodore oddly don't think in terms of masterpieces/eclipsing or whatnot. Oddly I've never finished CT! (I had the PS1 experience growing up, but saw later bits at friends) Ones I gravitate to are Lufia 2 (very cool field map interactions and puzzle dungeons, great game flow and presentation), FFMQ (similar, "very easy" but also very accessible), SaGa Frontier (neat tech/spell systems, big parties, branching scenarios, flawed but cool)
@vontheodore I guess anything with non-linear character progression like Final Fantasy Legend 2, FF2J. Many of them maybe "miss the mark" but are still enjoyable for their novelty. Chrono Cross (which I like to think of more as Radical Dreamers expanded than Chrono Trigger sequel) tries a lot of super neat ideas for an RPG and I liked that you could run from any battle and regear, a nifty spell system, they way the level your whole party at boss fights, amazing soundtrack
@vontheodore Also anything Tri-Ace which is a usually a mashup of very neat hybrid action core mechanics, character recruitment and interaction systems, and then a bunch of frankly-convoluted-but-cool crafting/skill system stuff that lets you really open up the game to do more (also lets you have fun breaking the systems and pushing those to the limit if you really want to grind). Anyways, I'll leave it at that, but thought I'd share a few ^^
