Musk and his minions have reinstated the account of one of the nation's most prominent bigots. This is not remotely surprising to anyone who's paying the slightest attention.

I remain surprised, and disappointed, that so many people in the journalism world still choose to use that platform -- knowing that they are supporting people who want to see the U.S. become a right-wing dictatorship.

Journalism has options, but most journalists ignore them.

@dangillmor when journalism is about access and not lighting up dark places - they allow themselves to be compromised.
@dangillmor they must really like the beer at that Nazi Bar
@dangillmor I am so glad I closed my account. Don't want to go back to that cesspool.
@dangillmor it might not be a dictatorship yet, but US politics have been on the right for 100+ years. They just think the Dems are left, because the Republicans are so vwry far to the right.
There us no political left in the USA, just like there's none in AUS.

@dangillmor

It is a tricky equation:

Moral integrity vs monthly income

@dangillmor The journalists forgot the part about the journalists going down in the first few rounds
Their egos and incomes depend on the numbers so that overrides any integrity. Hasn't it always been that way?
@dangillmor can you say which account they reinstated? I never go there anymore.

@rabbijill @dangillmor Elon Musk reinstated the Twitter account of Nick Fuentes, who is a white Supremacist notorious for denying the Holocaust and peddling Antisemitism.

The venom he spews belongs nowhere on Twitter. Ritchie Torres (@RitchieTorres)

Twitter
@meheller wow. What a mess. He should be allowed nowhere on social media
@dangillmor
Part of me thinks every journalist should post one tweet per day that just says “I no longer post relevant news on Twitter. Find me on other platforms (post/mastadon/Substack/etc) that don’t punish journalists for doing their jobs” but then I remember users wouldn’t see those posts because the algorithms would likely just exclude them from feeds. 😔

@dangillmor I’ve been curating a list of journalists to follow here. If anyone has a list I could look at, that would be awesome.

Also, why ARE journalists, scientists and activists willingly supporting an antitruther?

@BkPhilanthropy @dangillmor

Here is a long list of journalists on Mastodon (not mine, I just bookmarked the post)

@thespoonless Thank you so much!! I will feel more settled knowing where to get my news. I will begin following journalists tomorrow!

@dangillmor

It is disgusting that anyone is still frequenting that Musk mess.

It is filthy.

#Twitter

@dangillmor It's because most editors and most TV executives do not know about or care about right-wing extremism. They think people concerned about it are exaggerating. Even after January 6th.

The Republicans they know tend to be much more socially moderate and much less religious. And also much less representative of the GOP electorate.

@dangillmor I'm also very disappointed.
@dangillmor
I'll say it again: Choosing Twitter is choosing to support fascism.
@dangillmor All y’all mfs still stay on that platform though
@dangillmor we keep hearing that journalists now have to engage the public to drive traffic. If their job depends on it, it’s understandable. Doesn’t justify anything, but it makes sense.
@dangillmor
American journalists have no backbone.
@dangillmor To be fair you'll need to spend at least 10 minutes, maybe 15 minutes of your time to get used to Mastodon. So, you can't claim those people are lazy or ignorant. /s
@dangillmor Now, thanks to Nick Clegg, Meta has done similarly...
