Trans people are a fraction of a fraction of America. Republicans want to drive that fraction of a fraction into hiding for a simple reason -- they're the 1 minority group the right feels safest bashing right now. They don't care & it's just a fun way to smear vulnerable people.

People in the "center" want to pretend there's some "question" or crisis to resolve. But trans people face more obstacles and scrutiny than almost anyone.

Skeptics are using the newess of the issue to make it feel icky and iffy, which happens whenever oppressed people gain rights.

@lolgop I would say that smearing vulnerable people *is* the Republican brand, at least since Nixon pivoted to the “Southern Strategy” (which just an euphemism for “embracing racism”). Seems like going after vulnerable groups - the creation of an “other” to attack and be outraged by - is literally the only thing holding the GOP together

It's even more than that. It's a way to condition people to fascist attacks - choose a very small very fringe minority and gin up moral panic to justify oppressive legislation and condone harrassment and violence. Not enough push back allows that fascist infrastructure to grow and be used for other groups and situations.

I was explaining this very concept once to someone who was saying if you don't know a lot of trans people, then how do you know these things being said about them isn't true. My reply was I don't have to know tons of trans people, I just have to know bigotry when I see it.

@lolgop I think it's more than that. The existence of trans people especially (but lgbtqi+ prime generally too) upsets the foundational assumptions of the conservative hetero normal world view.
