Seems we might have an answer for why, on the eve of the 2016 election, someone at the FBI lied to the NYTimes about the links the FBI saw between Trump and Russia.

Because the then-head of counterintelligence for FBI in NY was just indicted for money laundering and helping Russian oligarchs evade sanctions.

Former Top FBI Official in New York Charged in Money Laundering

Prosecutors say Charles McGonigal, who was chief of counterintelligence, worked secretly for Oleg Deripaska to investigate a Russian rival.

The New York Times
@maxkennerly It also might explain why Giuliani claimed "The FBI is Trumpland."

@theLastTheorist @maxkennerly Not Giuliani, but an #FBI agent.

"The FBI is Trumpland," a current agent told The Guardian, noting that some have openly discussed voting for Trump next week.

Clinton is "the Antichrist personified to a large swath of FBI personnel," an unnamed agent told The Guardian. "The reason why they're leaking is they're pro-Trump."

Rudy Giuliani comments on FBI tension and Hillary Clinton emails

FBI agents have told former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani that there is "a revolution going on" inside the agency that has now "reached its boiling point."

Insider
@Str8nger @maxkennerly Ah I should have remembered that Giuliani's prose is not that slick. Collapsed in my mind because it was probably one of these FBI agents.

Rudy Giuliani Confirms FBI Insiders Leaked Information To The Trump Campaign

"Did I hear about it? You're darn right I heard about it."

@maxkennerly
I also thought of reports at the time that it was NY FBI agents that pressured FBI Director Comey to disclose the finding of HRC emails on a laptop related to an HRC aide. No new info was found but if anything tanked HRC's election chances, it was that late disclosure.
@Silversalty @maxkennerly I wouldn't be surprised if there are more agents at the NY field office that are compromised
@stony3k @maxkennerly
Likely conservative Hilary haters. Whether on the take with Russia is another matter. But with this news, definitely worth a full investigation though probably not going to happen.
Josh Marshall on Twitter

“Weird. McGonigal got put in charge of CI at the NYC field office like almost to the day they reopened the Clinton emails case. ironies. https://t.co/EWVzjZDoxy via @TPM”

Twitter
@Silversalty @maxkennerly This derailed Hillary’s chances for the Presidency. Putin wanted her to lose. Did Mcgonical have something to do with that?

@parislady1492 @maxkennerly

I posted a link on this elsewhere in this thread..

@parislady1492 @Silversalty @maxkennerly Ask Rudy Giuliani. He knows who his friends at NY FBI field office were.
How a McConnell-backed effort to lift Russian sanctions boosted a Kentucky project

A spokesman said the Senate majority leader did not know the measure would help a company building an aluminum mill in an impoverished part of his home state.

The Washington Post
@DavePerrino @maxkennerly Didn’t #MitchMcConnell convince Deripaska to build an aluminum plant in Kentucky. Some thing smells here?

@parislady1492 @DavePerrino @maxkennerly
I live 15 miles from where it was to be built. Most locals had hopes but knew it was probably balderdash.

A corrupt governor.
A corrupt oligarch.
A corrupt businessman.

We know how that ends in Eastern Kentucky.

@maxkennerly the NYT wanted to be lied to though. They wanted to tank Clinton.
@maxkennerly it explains why Jared and Lee Zeldin get away with M_____.
@maxkennerly Meanwhile the NYT will not rethink their practice of being used by partisan Cops and FBI.

@maxkennerly

Sounds like they're missing about a half dozen charges. One of them should result in him spending the rest of his life in solitary in Canon City, CO.

@maxkennerly Have there been contacts between McGonigal & Donald J. Trump/his org/Trump-employed persons, referring to intelligence on Russian oligarchs in NY/ the U.S.?

@maxkennerly can someone tag Matt Tabbi and whiney Glenn Greenwald?
@Kim @maxkennerly I’m waiting for that tag-team expose on McGonigal with bated breath.
@maxkennerly I'm not sure what the amount of money it would take to sacrifice my integrity, but I can tell you that $225K is an order of magnitude or two away from it.
@maxkennerly My first thought was "how many more of them are on the take?" Because I doubt he's the only weak link.
@maxkennerly: They indicted the Argyle Gargoyle?

@maxkennerly

*Everything* is projection with the far-right.

Remember how much time they spent talking about the Deep State?

@maxkennerly @mmasnick Jesus. It doesn’t look good, does it
@maxkennerly I just remember begging the NYT to do journalism on the the FBI n NYC and they destroyed Clinton and helped elect Trump instead. And I unsubscribed to them 11/16 after they helped elect trump.

@maxkennerly even if there was none... it is WELL KNOWN that the Kremlin finances radical right wing, because they know, they are the most violent = biggest trouble makers... which is "strange" because it COMPLETELY contradicts that Moscow is against Nazis, if they are supporting Nazis abroad. https://theconversation.com/how-russians-have-helped-fuel-the-rise-of-germanys-far-right-105551

this is equal to #USA support of #Talibán

How Russians have helped fuel the rise of Germany’s far right

The political power of Germany’s Russian community is significant, and it’s helped fuel the rise of the right-wing, anti-immigration Alternative for Germany party known as the AfD.

The Conversation
@maxkennerly something stunk at the FBI in New York and The NY Times fell for this false all clear for Trump and Russia
@maxkennerly how is this story already hidden from the home pages of both NYT and WaPo?
@maxkennerly So the investigations into 'weaponization of Federal law enforcement' are going to have a very short half-life? Or become an extended theater of finger-pointing and name-calling?
I was thinking the same thing when I saw those headlines. The FBI needs a restructuring of the entire management. I’m not sure that the FBI can even be saved at this point, but as we have seen from the whistleblowers, something is rotten.
@maxkennerly I have nothing of value to add, but wanted to join the rest of you in being really effing pissed off.
@maxkennerly I saw this on reddit. Makes sense.
@maxkennerly I asked the NYT ombudsman about this for a year and got no reply. Thank you for posting.

@maxkennerly “someone at the FBI” planted way ahead of time, just like trump was fluffed and flattered and paid. Then delivered plenty of documents, secrets, policy. Looks like Putin got what he wanted at many levels including Maria Butina and the NRA. Plenty right wing crazies including in the House continue to sing Putin’s song. WAKE UP.

#IndictTrumpNOW

@maxkennerly Makes you wonder how high this goes...
@maxkennerly are we going to get any answers? Is there going to be indictments? Will we ever see an #unredacted #mullerreport ? Of course we won't
@maxkennerly Judith Miller 2.0, Clinton Cash 2.0, Podesta email 2.0. This keeps happening because the “hackers” know that the new york times is easily hackable
@maxkennerly Yeah, if Merrick Garland so orders. 🤷‍♀️
@maxkennerly Hillary should have never conceded She should of have ordered a Russian investigation in 2016. I wonder if we will ever see the full report without the redactions on the Mueller report.
