Florida teachers told to remove books from classroom libraries or risk felony prosecution

Teachers in Manatee County, Florida, are being told to make their classroom libraries β€” and any other "unvetted" book β€” inaccessible to students, or risk felony prosecution. The new policy is part of an effort to comply with new laws and regulations championed by Governor Ron DeSantis (R). It is based on the premise, promoted by right-wing advocacy groups, that teachers and librarians are using books to "groom" students or indoctrinate them with leftist ideologies.

@juddlegum How is this not a violation of the first amendment?
@juddlegum Forever 1984 in Florida
@juddlegum You need #hashtags like #Florida #books #library #GOP to get more views. BTW, have they tossed the #climatescience books yet? I think all this is just a #distraction from abrupt #climatechange IMHO, cause horrific impacts are now guaranteed, and that state is number 1 in #risk
@juddlegum I really don’t understand how this is legal ?
@ramona @juddlegum Anything can be legal if you make a law.

@juddlegum

"Hey, we are not fascists, we don't burn books... We just make them unavailable to kids and teachers..."

@juddlegum I guess this is what they mean by "freedom isn't free."
@juddlegum Isn't anyone going to sue him? Come on!
@juddlegum can they put up a list of books in that closed library next to the closed sign?
@juddlegum This eerily reminds me of the covers that were imposed on many grocery store alcohol sections on Sundays in my younger years. This time though it's diverse knowledge that's a vice, and you aren't allowed to even look at them in class.
@juddlegum absolute insanity. This is what happens when they pander to the far right
@juddlegum First, we take away the books ... πŸ˜”
@juddlegum America! Where books are banned before guns ! #GunControlNow
#ThisIsAmerica

@Natalia_Army_of_1 @juddlegum

Guess ideas are considered more dangerous than guns.

@antipode77 @juddlegum they are to idiocy indeed! You may be onto something....πŸ’‹πŸ·πŸ˜·
@Natalia_Army_of_1 @antipode77 @juddlegum Those are the sort of people - in the upper "tier" of that meme - who plan to criminalize possession and reading of the novel 1984.
⬆️ Image description: shelves are blocked by large papers. There are notes β€œsorry we are closed”.
@juddlegum Wow. this is just like religious extremism... Amazing.
@juddlegum good luck explaining that to the kids.
