#ABookYouShouldRead

You should read "The Golem and the Djinni" by Helen Wecker.

You should read it because:

- it's very charming in its depiction of 18th Century New York

- It mixes golems and djinn as concepts into a unified whole with thought and sensitivity being all sorts of lovely to semitic peoples

- the themes of being an outsider and finding community are touching.

You will like it if you read Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell.

@Homebrewandhacking this was such a great book. I still think about it from time to time.
@jbonewald @Homebrewandhacking I loved this book as well, a wonderful read. The sequel is good to, but it didn't engage me quite as much as the first one.
@jarulf @jbonewald @Homebrewandhacking The sequel was definitely lacking some of the heart that was so prominent in the first book, but I still liked it.

@Homebrewandhacking Yes, yes, and yes! I loved this book. It's probably the most enthralling depiction of immigrant tenement life in NYC in the late 1800s that I've ever read.

(I also loved Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell)

@Homebrewandhacking ooh, thanks for the recommendation!
@Homebrewandhacking I really liked it! There's a sequel, too, right? Any idea how good it is? I'm wary of sequels...
@Dubikan I'm told there is a sequel but not as good as the first. I'm curious about it!
