Thirteen years ago the Supreme Court decided corporations are people under the First Amendment.

Today, sold-out politicians block progress on all fronts to appease their corporate donors.

Citizens United is among the worst decisions in history. It corrupts our system every day.

@rbreich
But at the time the SCOTUS scoffed at the idea that it would corrupt the political process.
@rbreich
If corporations are people shouldn't they be taxed at the same rate as people?
@rumblestiltskin @rbreich Well, they are taxed the same as wealthy people...
@rbreich well said Robert, they need to outlaw corporate donations to politicians in any form. The money Americans spend on political promotion is a global embarrassment and disgrace. US polticians don’t win elections they procure them, and every single dollar they spend is a hammer blow to democracy.
@rbreich interesting we don’t throw corporations or their officers in jail when they break laws
@rbreich - and yet they don’t drag the corp into jail when they kill people. 🤔
@rbreich
Antonin Scalia and his coup confederacy did everything in their power to cement the United States as a white nationalist oligarchy, starting with the 2020 presidential election fiasco in Floriduh, and SCOTUS’ foot’s been on the throttle henceforth in achieving that end, by any and all unconstitutional, seditious means necessary.
@rbreich and the Supreme Court targets Roe v Wade. Disgusting.
@rbreich they decided corporations were people in the 1800s. They decided cash was speech.
@rbreich The death knell of electoral poltics.
@rbreich That was the final nail in the coffin for American "Democracy". Washington warned us about a two party system.
@rbreich
If corporations are people, shouldn't they be executed for capital crimes?

@rbreich

Crowdfund a focused legal effort and then tackle it head on and get it overturned.

It needs money and focus to get it done.

How can you imprison a corporation? With plea deals? Only it’s people can be imprisoned. Which proves it is not a person. It’s people give it voice which they craft, not it. It is not sentient, it’s people are. By definition it is not then a person. If I can say this in 10 minutes what could be done?

@rbreich if corporations are people, doesn’t the 13th amendment prohibit private ownership of corporations?
@goerz @rbreich
Yes, but thanks to "other interpretations", "human" corps are able to hire and discharge their proletariats.
@rbreich @goerz I like your thinking here.
@rbreich Fortune and Disparity: The greater your fortune the more important it is to share all of it with those both suffering and less fortunate. If you cannot, you will wander from the path of light and find yourself tempted to oppress and corrupted by greed. *The largest stockholders of many major corporations are public pensions. Whose liability to provide is with the states. The corruption here is not subtle. Change again starts individually and locally. OWOP
@rbreich Our Supreme Court is nothing more than a political court. We deserve a balanced 5-5 court with equal representation on both sides. Otherwise we have the rot that we have now.
@rbreich if corporations are people then why can't people be corporations and get all the benefits they enjoy?

@rbreich

For the 1,000th time, this simple FACT >

Democrats work for the PEOPLE
Republicans work for CORPORATIONS

Both parties demonstrate their priorities every day.

@rbreich corporations are people too (until tax time then they are corporations)

@rbreich

Absolutely, alas, to its great detriment.

@rbreich I would guess that a line could be drawn from this disaster ruling to the outrageous people who have won elected offices. Outrage is a great money maker.

@rbreich Fake court.

Constitution says judges "shall hold their offices during good behaviour".

Not "for life". Not "until impeached". The moment they commit bad behaviour, they AUTOMATICALLY lose their office. It's just a matter of confirming it.

It's time to stop pretending that these fake judges are judges -- the bad behaviour is blatant at this point. Congress, the President, the states, other courts must stop recognizing the fake judges.

@rbreich It has a long history of being a terrible idea. And SCOTUS is a sad joke of a Supreme court.
@rbreich I've been thinking about this a lot lately and wonder which world leader will step up and reverse this grave injustice - imagine the tax revenue and plethora of other benefits of closing corporate loopholes. I'd love to see it happen in Canada but it won't while corporations can threaten to pack up and move their operations south to continue enjoying living above the law and society.

@rbreich

You are incredible. 🙏 for you daily.
You are among the warriors. Thank you.

@rbreich The courts are run by corporations, and it seems to be the Federalist ( so-called organization) are where the big money comes from.
@rbreich if corporations are people, then surely corporations would be able to be punished under the law, such as jail time.
@rbreich Thank you Roberts Court. What a disgrace!
@rbreich If corporations are people, why can't the Trump Organization go to jail?
@rbreich
I'm sorry, but until Texas executes a Corporation, they really can't be considered people.
@rbreich I think we need to call them "corporate owners" now.
@rbreich Are Unions people under the 1st Amendment? Oh ... and are Guns people under the 2nd Amendment?
The latter being no more lunatic than the former 🙃
@rbreich Citizens united was the second fuck yo if the Supreme Court. How can a corporation be a person? They can’t vote. So why should they be able to buy an election? More radical #GOP bull shit. Their only loyalty is to the Al mighty dollar and who can give them the most.
@rbreich you can say that again & again. Citizens United has ruined our democracy.
@rbreich I wonder what George Will has to say today, being such a defender of it then.
@rbreich , yes, but what do we do about it? There is (or should be) a basic, clear definition of "person" to go with the principle of "one person, one vote." But how do we codify it? A literal act of Congress? Constitution 3.0? Is there a practical means to right this wrong?
