What's the PONT

@dyfrig my friend got run over from behind a couple of weeks ago.
Leg degloved.
Helmet smashed.

But he's alive. Without his helmet, he would be dead.
Ps: his leg is " fine" now. He's not limping.

@IoanSaid I've crashed and smashed my helmet, so I'm completely sold on having it and I'd never go without. But this does make me think about what a good system where we might not need helmets would look like. Glad your friend is relatively ok, sounds horrible
@dyfrig look at Utrecht
@IoanSaid Will have a look, cheers!

@dyfrig it was pretty horrible and he's an older fellow too. Very lucky

Hmm...
I've been daily commuting for 5 years.
I've had two accidents in that time. Once was low speed when I hit a pot hole. Helmet cracked, my head didn't.
The second was when my back wheel went out crossing tram tracks. No head impact whatsoever.
However... My commute is 36km in total, and to my mind the risk increases the longer you're playing in traffic. I'd love to not wear a helmet, but cycle infrastructure in the UK is so poor it's not a risk I can justify to myself.
@v_perjorative Completely agree, I've also had 2 crashes, one of which I cracked a helmet. I'd never be without one now. Even if I hadn't, I'd still feel uncomfortable without one given that roads are primarily designed for cars, not bikes
@dyfrig I spent a day cycling around Copenhagen without a helmet, and it was wonderful and stress free. That's the ideal.
