What a time to love indie apps. Third-party Mastodon clients are bringing back a sense of curiosity and excitement I hadn't felt since the heyday of Twitter clients in 2009-2011.

What am I missing? Are you working on one not on shown here? I'd love to know.

Time to work on a story 💪

@lapcatsoftware Thanks. Insta-buy and will cover it in this week's newsletter.
@lapcatsoftware Jeff - So glad to see this. Your tweaks extension is the only thing that made the web experience useful for Twitter. This will remove the single biggest pain point I've experienced with Mastadon so far. Thank you!

@viticci Woolly and Trunk

@mttvll

@jsit @viticci @mttvll The way Woolly organizes responses as threads is chef kiss.
@eliaschao @jsit @viticci @mttvll Agreed, can't read threads without it anymore. Despite lacking many features for now (switching to another app for those), it's why I'm using Woolly as my primary client.

@eliaschao @jsit @viticci @mttvll

@elk does some threading too with responses.

@eliaschao @jsit @viticci @mttvll tooot does this as well and it also shows the buttons (boost, like, etc) on each response!
@mbwelch @jsit @viticci @mttvll Will definitely give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion. 😊
@viticci metatext is one of them
@viticci thanks for sharing! Made me aware of some I didn’t even know about

@Ronnie I recommended Trunk too but I can’t for the life of me remember who makes it, and nowhere in the app does it have any contact info
@viticci Mastodon clients are starting to feel like Pokémon in both diversity and the need to catch them all…and I love it.
@viticci there’s also Woolly by @mttvll who is behind Fenix https://testflight.apple.com/join/2LVAJQTP

@th3storysofar @viticci @mttvll thanks! Tooting from it, has some nice things going on for it!
@viticci siamo d’accordo che Ivory si presenta meglio in giallo 🟡🐘
@viticci you should try out Woolly by @mttvll ! It features a really nice multi-column layout on iPadOS
@viticci The Trunk beta is in early stages but is interesting. A horizontal, spatial (ding) timeline. Different to all the other clients.
@Charles @viticci full beta… who do I need to follow to get into a future slot? https://testflight.apple.com/join/1ir4E70u

@viticci I’ve been big supporters of @mark and @paul the day Tweetbot became available. Sucks that it’s game
Over on that side but I’m in the alpha for @ivory and can’t wait to pay for the full app!
@viticci no Metatext on the list? I found its position syncing and new root handling the most pleasant among the publicly available apps ( which isn’t a lot)
@viticci Perhaps we should bring back Reportage for Mastodon 😜
@viticci But it’s time to make a big push for major Twitter presences to create a mirrored Mastodon feed. I only have 17 of 250+ that I’m following..
@viticci @kvenden in the meantime search for @[twittername]@bird.makeup and follow that. You can't interact but at least they'll be in your feed. And, at least for me, if I open the tweet in a web view I'm logged in and can reply. I've been testing this for myself for the last week and it seems reliable?
@samvarma thank you SO much for telling me this! I don’t need to internet, just don’t want to lose my normal chronological news feed :)
@samvarma So I followed about 25 via that method but none of them are showing up in my Ivory feed yet. 2 new ones are showing up on Twitter since then. Is there a bit of a delay?
@samvarma it’s working now :) hard closed the apps and gave it some time and they’re showing up. This is amazing, game changer! Thanks so much, hope this method doesn’t break lol
@viticci @kvenden man, totally had the same experience. Delay, seemed like some were missing etc. However after much (very time consuming) back and forth between a couple Masto clients and Reeder I am reasonably sure it's working 🤪
@viticci @kvenden CORRECTION: I believe I can now confirm that @bird.makeup is only propagating the *root* tweet in a thread. So not really a solution, unfortunately
@samvarma I thought you’d been testing this for a week? :P what do you mean by root? It won’t keep updating once it’s caught up?
@kvenden So one-off, original tweets are showing up. But if that user created a thread, only the first tweet is showing up, *not* the replies they made to the original tweet. I thought I was seeing it all, but I just did another comparison with the same user in Reeder and that's what's happening. Sorry!
@kvenden trust me I am also crestfallen. Reeder seems to work, but it takes ages syncing my ~170 follows, and you only see a cropped preview of any photo in the tweet (and just of the first photo if the tweet has more than one). It's also an ugly timeline. I'll post back here if I figure anything out that works!
@samvarma but so we get all new tweets? Just not tweets and replies? (Threads)? That’s def better than nothing
@kvenden seems like it
@samvarma I am too, but I’ll take anything as close as I can get if I quit checking Twitter altogether
@kvenden but I'm ocd about my timeline—I want to read it all, or I might misinterpret a tweet for which an earlier tweet gives context
@samvarma one thing it definitely doesn’t do is show tweets that were retweeted by these users unfortunately, but I’m still finding this to be a huge improvement getting most of my feed again :)
@kvenden definitely better than nothing!
@kvenden and now I'm seeing a thread, labeled as such by the client, and it's complete. I don't know. I guess your mileage may vary!
@samvarma haha cool. Well Fenix quit working last night finally so I’m done on Twitter and going to live with this it’s close enough :) if you learn anything else, I’d love to know. Thanks for all of your help!
@kvenden brutal. So it goes. Glad I could help! For what it's worth I am seeing some quote tweets and replies here so 🤷‍♂️ This post linking to the creator of bird.makeup was also interesting:

Proud to introduce my new activitypub project: https://bird.makeup . Do you wish to follow on mastodon some people that are still on the bird site? Now you can! You can even follow the muskrat if you want @[email protected] (but why would you?)

@kvenden @viticci Or just bite the bullet and dump Twitter
@viticci I was just thinking the same thing
@viticci not only clients but helper apps like @pragmaticcode Linky and @simonbs Re:Toot. @rizzi Reeder if you want to just subscribe to posts.
@mikethefifth @viticci @pragmaticcode @simonbs @rizzi You can also follow mastodon posts in @NetNewsWire using the https://<MastodonInstance>/@<UserName>.rss url scheme
@viticci @pragmaticcode @mikethefifth @simonbs @rizzi +1 on #Reeder. Currently using to follow accounts I don't interact with, mixed into my rss
