They don't actually care about the debt.

@rbreich No, they're wiling to trash everything in order to make liberal's lives miserable and infuriate them. You're way too easy on them. They don't give a fuck about "chipping away at vital social programs". If a program helps them primarily, they're all for it.

@rbreich #MintTheCoin #14thAmendment There are perfectly legal/constitutional means for bypassing the absurdity of Congress authorizing/requiring spending and tax cuts, and then coming back to say they don't like the debt that results. Minting a trillion-dollar coin is no more of a dirty trick than reneging on our debt. And insisting that we follow the 14th Amendment isn't a trick at all. It is what we should have been doing all along.

@rbreich is it really so that none of the folks who voted for these guys are benefitting from these programs ? The angry right, all wealthy and healthy? Or is this just dumbness beyond belief? Maybe if, once the money runs out, furloughs at the military and border patrol? Nobody guarding the fence in Arizona and Texas? That would turn the tables on this hostage situation.

@rbreich What the Republicans want to do isn't merely "chip away" at Social Security and Medicare. Their ultimate goal is to abolish both programs.

In the meantime, their demanded deep cuts would mean the difference between food or privation for seniors, between shelter and homelessness, and quite literally between life and death for some due to lack of healthcare.

And for Republicans, the savage cruelty is entirely the point.

I am generation X, and I have known since the Reagan years that the goal of the republican party is to make sure that I work, until I fall into a grave, and that there will not be Social Security for me, despite them taking huge chunks out of my pay since I got my first job (paying taxes) at the age of 14.
