@anneapplebaum I listened to your discussion yesterday & enjoyed it, if enjoyed is the right word for the subject matter 😟 ... I do recommend it, let's put it that way!
@anneapplebaum hi Anne, can I chat with you about a guest spot on my podcast?

@anneapplebaum

Through major economic and social disasters, it’s human nature to essentially want the comfort and safety of their parential figures.

Isn’t authoritarianism just insecure members of the population looking for their mommies teat?

@anneapplebaum
Nice interview! Anne Applebaum sure knows her stuff. #Democracy #Autocracy
@anneapplebaum Loved this conversation especially your point about how our financial system is enabling autocrats. Amazing how much time is spent blaming social media, while zero time is spent scrutinizing our financial system.

@anneapplebaum

The podcast that led me to "Twilight of Democracy" which I am 132 pages into.

@anneapplebaum This was a great listen, but as a layperson, not a historian/political scientist, I'm struggling with a question: _modern_ fascism goes hand-in-glove with political/economic corruption, but was that always the case? We know Mussolini didn't really make trains run on time, but didn't the Nazis punish their own, even for things like stealing from prisoners? Did Il Duce, Franco, Salazar, Hitler, etc., also have people like Bannon or Manafort? Or are they a new feature in Fascism 2.0?
