@20002ist @JoshuaHolland I actually didnt quit noisily. I ghosted.
@Dahlialith @20002ist @JoshuaHolland I ghosted too, so Twitter followers may not know I'm here unless they see the Mastodon address in my bio there. I keep thinking I should post an explanatory tweet but then I don't.
@kcivey @20002ist @JoshuaHolland too many people left in a huff then came back. Didnt wanna be that guy. So here I am on Mastodon and Post and twirling around in the wind. Dumb on my part but at least principled according to my own forever shifting principles.
@Dahlialith I find Post almost unusable.
@JoshuaHolland Same. I realize it's still in beta, but it's been months and it's still very glitchy. Plus, the format is just not for me. I prefer the more Twitter-like exchanges than longford, single column blogs. @Dahlialith
@Dahlialith @20002ist @JoshuaHolland I did not quit at all. I work off of lists and the usability of Twitter has not changed at all for me. No extra "hate speech" etc. Nothing. And Twitter remains one hell of a lot more usable than Mastodon. Going from Twitter to Mastodon is like abandoning a Porsche and buying a used Toyota Corolla off of a street corner. Musk is garbage, but a lot of the dialogue is seriously overblown.
@bmaz @20002ist @JoshuaHolland I think I've landed at the conclusion that the quit to stay ratio is just intensely personal: How much you benefit versus how viscerally gross it is to be a useful knowing widget for that guy. Its why I don't tell other people what to do but also why I feel my own decisions awash with vagueness and shifting daily. Its also why I didn't do anything noisily; I'm still figuring it out.
@Dahlialith @bmaz @20002ist I try not to be judgy and get that people can come down on the other side of the line from me but I am mystified by those who don't even see it as an ethical question in the first place.
@Dahlialith @20002ist @JoshuaHolland Oh, don't get me wrong, would never presume to tell others what to do, that is a personal decision. I've known what a complete jackass Musk is since either 2006 or 2007 when I met him at the original rollout of the Tesla Roadster in Santa Monica. He is really a horrible person. Just, for me, if am to use social media, it has to actually be usable. Mastodon has a very long way to go. So I remain bifurcated for now.

@bmaz @Dahlialith @20002ist

Seems like you're concerned about your experience but don't seem to realize that you're supporting Musk's project. I wish I could do that too but I can't bring myself to do so as he turns Twitter into a giant red-pilling machine.

If decent people left en masse, it wouldn't take long for Twitter to go bankrupt and end up being run by a boring corporate CEO who isn't motivated by ludicrous conspiracy theories.

Classic collective action problem.

@JoshuaHolland @bmaz @Dahlialith ethicly minded people will stay here and make it work. Over time the fediverse wins. Just like other open source projects server room, the web, web software, email, search infrastructure, Wi-Fi routers, microprocessors, CNC, robotics, space exploration, basically anywhere there is commodity functionality, open source wins. The fediverse is next. I never invested much in #twitbook, so I haven’t lost much. I feel for you and others who did and have strong moral convictions. A share those convictions. In time, like all the above areas, fediverse will be better. In time.

@imklg @JoshuaHolland @Dahlialith So, if I do not abandon the far more functional platform I am not "ethically minded? Seriously? What a load of preachy garbage. I have a day job and am not getting any younger, I don't have time for this. If Mastodon can improve itself significantly, maybe I would make a full switch. They not only are not improving, doing so seems to be against their stated ethos.
@bmaz @JoshuaHolland @Dahlialith you said you didn’t understand. I shared my motivation, clearly saying, in my mind. Etc.
@bmaz @Dahlialith @JoshuaHolland some people like myself came here for ethical reasons. Many will leave for the reasons you state and have. Ethics is a reason to choose this platform over others. I meant the ‘ethically minded’ statement in a very general sense, not specifically directed towards you. Ethics is such a strongly prevalent theme here, I figure most know what I mean. Sorry if I offended.
@imklg @JoshuaHolland @Dahlialith No, I never said that I did not understand. And you specified "ethically minded" people, not yourself.
@bmaz @JoshuaHolland @Dahlialith again I apologized and explained my statement.
@JoshuaHolland @Dahlialith @bmaz looking over my posts I got this conversation wrapped up into another. Apologizing again for the lack of context due to similarity. Almost identical thread title and reparte.
@imklg @JoshuaHolland @Dahlialith Again, no worries whatsoever, and thanks for the clarification. I've known Dahlia and Josh for a pretty long time, and they know me. I did not know you and had concern with being painted with something I really did not say. Again, sincere thanks for the clarification.
@bmaz @imklg @JoshuaHolland this right here? This is so so so good. Thank you both.
@imklg @JoshuaHolland @Dahlialith Fair enough, no worries whatsoever.
