As MAGA sheriffs in IL refuse to enforce IL’s new gun safety law—a reminder that it's "state's rights" when it comes to banning abortion, immigration, books, lgbtq, & 'woke' businesses—but it's magically not state's rights when passing proven gun safety laws.😑

Absurd hypocrisy.

Moreover, gun safety measures also save the lives of law enforcement. If you care about ensuring police officers get home safer, as I do, then you’d want to ensure weapons of war are not on the streets.

@QasimRashid I live in IL. What is being done to force law enforcement to comply with the law? Where should we be putting pressure to make it happen?

@PamSourelis @QasimRashid

Yes, I'm wondering the same. When some sheriff's said they wouldn't enforce this law, Pritzker reportedly said, "Yes you will".

So how does he handles this?

@juca @QasimRashid I would contact my state rep and senator, but they're both Republicans; the rep is a MAGA republican. So I guess I'll contact the governor's office and see what they have to say.

@PamSourelis @QasimRashid

Me, too! Are you in Southern IL by chance?

@juca No, I'm in Woodstock, 60 miles NW of Chicago, my home town. Woodstock is blue, but the county is red, red, red. I'm going to call the McHenry County sheriff's office tomorrow and see what they have to say about this.

@PamSourelis

It's pretty up there. My D and her husband live in Northbrook. When they were looking for a house, we scouted around up north, but the commutes get way too long.

I see you have some beautiful horses.

@juca Thank you,. They are very dear to me.
@juca Northbrook is actually way east of me. Woostock is about 15 miles from the western IL/WI border. When I moved out here 20 years ago, is was very rural. It's becoming suburban now, which I hate.

@PamSourelis

Suburbia has a way of consuming the pretty rural areas. To leave the city and find green spaces and wildlife, is such a breath of fresh air.

My impression is, that northern IL, west of Chicago is quite pretty, but I haven't had the chance to explore very far west.

@juca It used to be gorgeous. At least we still have large parks up here, including Glacial Park, a state park in Ringwood.

@PamSourelis

I've long thought it would be great to leave S. IL and move up there. It takes us 6 plus hours to get to our daughter's place.

I've looked at real estate in that whole area west of Chicago...the challenge for us, is that it is a much pricier market than down here in the sticks.

@juca @PamSourelis Try Wisconsin. Lower taxes, lower house prices, still pretty good schools (a little location dependent), ... GOP controlled state assembly, but they're not ultra-MAGA. (Yet?) Tons of state parks and trails, and you can get within a couple hours of Chicago, Milwaukee and Madison.

Been here 16 years. Wouldn't say I'll never leave, but I really enjoy it here.

@TehAnalyticsAreTehSuck @PamSourelis

I'd consider Wisconsin! I'd feel better if it were a blue state...but maybe we could help turn the state blue again.

My extended family has a cottage on the opposite side of the lake, and I think there's a ferry that goes across from Milwaukee. That could be handy.

Thanks!

@PamSourelis @juca Pam do lmk how it goes. I’m in northern IL too.

@QasimRashid @PamSourelis

Interesting! Nice to know...I can't wait to see how this plays out.

@QasimRashid @PamSourelis @juca Grew up in Carpentersville. Went to Dundee Crown. :) Anything those of us out of state can do?
@garpu Good question. Let me find out what the governor's office has to say about the threat from these sheriffs.

@PamSourelis @QasimRashid

If you find out anything, let us know!

@PamSourelis @QasimRashid @juca laws are always enforced at the discretion of law enforcement, often to the detriment of the most vulnerable.
@c0dec0dec0de Yes. And those with privilege need to be calling it out more often, in ways that might make a difference.
@PamSourelis ditto in IL. I’m contacting my state rep and Senator and calling on them to speak out and demand accountability
@QasimRashid I'm going to begin with the McHenry County Sheriff to see what their position is.
@PamSourelis @QasimRashid
How about refusing to fund any departments that refuse to comply with the law?
Cities/ counties can surely hire/create department that will follow the law.
Impeach any elected (sherrif?) officials that decide not to honor their oath of office.
@ChofuAlum Who does the impeaching?
@PamSourelis
Not from Illinois, but I'm assuming it would be the IL legislators. In some States, the Governor can simply remove elected officials. For example, in Florida, the Governor can remove any elected School Board member. In fact, that's the only way (outside of the next election) to get rid of them.
@QasimRashid Yeah, but who would know safety better than a group of "cowboys" with no oversight?
@QasimRashid it’s probably because the sheriffs understand that criminals don’t obey gun laws.
@Mindhead great so by your logic let’s get rid of all laws because criminals won’t obey them 🙄
@QasimRashid The United States has a rampant gun culture that will never change.
@QasimRashid do we sound like hypocrites when we have sanctuary cities that don’t enforce immigration laws? I’m all for the sanctuary cities but makes it tough to then say “enforce the laws on the books!”, doesn’t it? Not a great precedent. Maybe I’m simplifying it too much 🤷🏻‍♂️
@mikequinn_ yes you’re over simplifying. Immigration law is federal law. And federal law can only be enforced by federal agents. State agents telling federal agents to do their own work, is not the same as a state agent telling a state govt to do their own work.
@QasimRashid fair enough. Like I said I’m in favor of both and I live in IL where my county sheriff isn’t going to enforce the weapons ban. Just something I thought of. Thanks for replying.
@QasimRashid
Wondering if the people can go after LE for refusing to enforce the.laws of the land. Criminally as accessories (in the event murders happen) as well as civil suits.
Wonder if the people could go after LE without any murders happening.
@QasimRashid obviously, it’s different, but it reminds me of NH signing constitutional concealed carry into effect over the protests of the state’s sheriff organization! Law enforcement wasn’t as far to the right as the legislature and governor!
@QasimRashid What's going on in IL? my mom's new family are mostly cops. I'm so thankful I don't have to have a relationship with them.
@QasimRashid Oooh. Found it. Grrrrr. Assholes need to do their damn jobs.
@QasimRashid If they refuse to enforce the law, they should be prosecuted and terminated.
@QasimRashid the police do not work for us.

@QasimRashid
Not shocked that here in IL, sheriffs not enforcing gun safety law.

Moreover, assault weapon owners are laughing in Governor's face regarding registering guns. 😡

@QasimRashid Maybe the only decent thing those magats have ever done.
@QasimRashid police over step their job
@QasimRashid The problem with rogue-cops is that policing in and of itself attracts some unsavory and unsuitable characters who only want to bully, not to server and protect.
@QasimRashid Riverside County CA has the same problem with its MAGA Sheriff Bianco. He selectively enforces the laws he approves of, which is not the mandate of a Sheriff. He was also a Proud Boys member if you can believe it.
@QasimRashid define a “weapon of war” vs a weapon of self defense…

@QasimRashid I suspect they think gun = safe. As if nothing can happen to them if they have a gun, but they will be killed at once if it’s taken away…

If guns kept you safe, war zones would have zero casualties.

@QasimRashid
Reminder: it is almost impossible to hold sheriffs accountable in the USA. This is why they brazenly commit crimes against citizens. They're even worse and more corrupt than regular cops.
@QasimRashid it is even more problematical when police just decide which laws they will and won’t enforce. At that point, what’s the point of having any laws. Or should the police be fired for dereliction of duty? It’s not outlawing guns. It is about keeping military weapons restricted to the military. I hunt. One shot. One deer. You don’t need a 40 round clip.
@QasimRashid I’m in Illinois. My take is that it’s not their job to decide which laws are constitutional, as they’ve claimed they’re doing. The courts do that. It’s their job to enforce laws on the books. They’re called law enforcement for a reason.
@QasimRashid
State police will have the power to enforce the new laws for the Governor . The people have to vote the sherriffs out.
@QasimRashid This is something that’s never made sense to me. Law enforcement should be the biggest proponent of banning assault weapons. But they’re not.
@QasimRashid What's the new policy?

@Cher @QasimRashid
Illinois bans new sales of assault rifles, requires current owners to voluntarily register.

House Bill 5471 also caps sales of high-capacity ammunition magazines, bans "switches" that convert legal handguns into assault weapons, and extends the ability of courts to prevent dangerous individuals from possessing a gun through firearm restraining orders.

@QasimRashid none of us are at our best when we have a firm sense if self-righteousness.
@QasimRashid MAGA sheriff's who violate Federal laws should be cut off from Federal funding
